The worst maintenance scenario for MRO professionals: • Ignore variability and uncertainty in schedules • Plan precisely without considering execution realities • Spread thin your resources and management attention on too many aircraft/trains/equipment • Don't apply full kitting • Launch work with no consideration for bottlenecks. In other words: chaos in aircraft / train / ship / etc. Maintenance Repair and Overhaul. The worst maintenance scenario is when you don't have a clear strategy. Or even worse, when you have conflicting strategies. One step forward, two steps back, get stuck, then start over again. A lack of clear scheduling is devastating for operational efficiency: • Lack of clarity → "where are we going with this maintenance?" • Decision paralysis → "what should we do next now?" • Poor results → "maintenance is delayed again" From the client's perspective, it's even worse. • "I don't understand their maintenance process, it's always changing" • "I think they maintain aircraft well, but not sure how" If you execute maintenance tasks without a clear plan, your clients won't be able to trust your process. You'll remain an unpredictable service provider. Good news: there is a clear road-map to streamline maintenance. 1. Dynamic Scheduling & Buffer Management You need to adapt schedules dynamically to handle variability and uncertainty. This approach will guide your decisions and actions. Buffer management enables to understand criticity and set priorities. 2. Work in Progress Management: Plan your efforts and increase your bottleneck capacity Before trying to execute maintenance tasks, 'think systems' first. You need to manage workload efficiently and maintain a balanced work-in-progress. For MRO operations, maintaining a low level of simultaneous work is mandatory (link in comments). Identifying and elevating your bottleneck is key (mechanics, metal sheet mechanics, avionics, non destructive control, etc.) 3. Full Kitting: Reach your efficiency goals Becoming 'efficient and reliable' is a game of preparation and consistency. You need to have all parts, tools, and job cards ready beforehand. FAA proposes new maintenance requirements for PW1100G engines ✈️ FAA is set to introduce updated maintenance regulations for Pratt & Whitney's PW1100G engines, impacting 430 US-registered engines powering Airbus A320neo-family jets. The move comes in response to revelations about additional components affected by a powder-metal manufacturing issue. P&W acknowledges the need for "accelerated replacement" of some PW1100G rotors, hubs, and air seals due to the manufacturing problem, aligning with previously disclosed comments. This builds upon P&W's earlier recall of 1,200 engines for inspection or replacement of high-pressure turbine and compressor disks. The FAA's proposal addresses an increased risk of failure for various powder-metal parts and follows recent airworthiness directives related to the powder-metal problem. P&W asserts consistency with previously released service bulletins, emphasizing collaboration with customers on fleet management. 🛫 Key components, including bladed rotors, high-pressure compressor hubs, and turbine air seals, are now identified as susceptible to early failure. The FAA recommends ultrasonic inspections for affected parts, further intensifying scrutiny after a 2020 incident involving an International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 turbofan. In response to the challenges presented by the Pratt & Whitney inspection program, the MRO industry should be ready to handle the heightened need for engine maintenance. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), India's leading aerospace design and development agency, has issued a tender seeking comprehensive maintenance, testing, and ongoing support for its fleet of GE-F404 and GE-F414 aircraft engines. This move is critical to safeguarding the operational readiness of India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) fleet and future programs. Powering India's Air Superiority The GE-F404 and GE-F414 engines are the heart of several LCA Tejas variants, including the PV, LSP, and NP series. Moreover, the advanced GE-F414-INS6 engines have been selected to power the upcoming LCA-AF Mk2 and the ambitious indigenous AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft) program. Currently, ADA oversees the maintenance of 10 GE-F404-F2J3 engines, 17 GE-F404-IN20 engines, and 9 GE-F414-INS6 engines. The agency has established a state-of-the-art MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility for GE engines at GTRE, Bangalore, featuring a module replacement shop and a roof-mounted engine test bed.
