The hospitality and tourism industry relies extensively on a dynamic ecosystem, where partnerships play a crucial role in both boosting business and fostering the growth of future professionals in the field. While classroom settings provide a strong foundation, it is through real-world experiences that theoretical knowledge is solidified. By participating in internships and engaging in on-site project collaborations, students are exposed to the daily operations and challenges of working in the industry. This immersive approach not only enhances their skillset but also helps them discover their areas of interest within the vast spectrum of hospitality and tourism. Moreover, these partnerships also serve as a talent pipeline for the industry. By engaging with students at an early stage, hospitality and tourism businesses can identify potential future employees. Through internship programs, businesses can assess students' work ethic, adaptability, and passion. Exceptional students can be offered part-time positions or even fast-tracked into graduate programs upon graduation. This targeted recruitment strategy not only fosters loyalty and reduces onboarding costs for businesses but also empowers students with a competitive edge as they enter the workforce. Hospitality and tourism sectors rely heavily on strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management abilities. Engaging in hands-on experiences enables students to refine these skills in real-life scenarios. For instance, a student assisting at a tourist information office develops effective communication with international visitors, handle unexpected situations, and efficiently organize themselves to manage multiple queries simultaneously. Employers across various fields highly value these soft skills, making graduates of hospitality and tourism programs versatile and adaptable candidates. AMFORHT, with its extensive network of educational institutions, industry experts, and associations, is well-positioned to facilitate these collaborations. It promotes partnerships between educational providers and industry stakeholders, acknowledging the mutual benefits of such alliances. AMFORHT's endeavors, including hosting and participating to global conferences and fostering conversations between different players, aid in exchanging best practices and successful partnership models in the industry. In doing so, it not only improves the quality of education and training but also contributes to the sustainable growth of the global hospitality and tourism sector. Bridging the Gap in Tourism Management Education and Career Opportunities As a Tourism Management graduate now working outside the field, I've observed that the knowledge we gain at university often differs from what we need in real-life work situations. For instance, in hotel jobs, the tasks don't vary much between degree holders and those with only a high school education. This lack of differentiation means many Tourism Management graduates end up working in different industries. There’s a significant gap in recognition and opportunity for tourism graduates. Employers often prefer experienced candidates, even if they don't have a degree, making it hard for fresh graduates to find relevant jobs. While some graduates succeed in the industry, many struggle to find jobs related to their studies. There must be a clear difference between the roles and opportunities available to degree holders and non-degree holders in the tourism field to ensure that the investment in higher education is valued and rewarded. To improve the situation, I suggest the following: • Practical Training: Universities should integrate more hands-on training, internships, and real-world projects into the curriculum. • Soft Skills Development: Emphasize the development of communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills. • Industry Partnerships: Establish partnerships with companies in the tourism industry for internships and job placements. • Career Support: Offer career counseling, job placement assistance, and help with resume writing and interview skills. • Certifications: Encourage students to obtain professional certifications recognized in the industry. • Specialized Courses: Provide courses in niche areas of tourism management, like eco-tourism or event management. • Alumni Network: Create an alumni mentorship program and highlight alumni success stories to inspire current students. • Continuous Feedback: Regularly seek feedback from industry professionals and graduates to keep the curriculum relevant and effective. By making these changes, we can better prepare Tourism Management students for their careers, ensure that degree holders are distinguished in the job market, and improve their job prospects in the industry.

Thrilled to reflect on my enriching 10-month journey as a Sustainability and Social Responsibility Associate at Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)!✈️🌱 This internship has been a profound journey of learning, growth, and self-discovery. Here’s a glimpse of what I have learned: 🌱 Sustainability in Tourism: Immersing myself in sustainability initiatives within the tourism industry has been very eye-opening; there are so many approaches and initiatives aiming to steer this industry toward a more sustainable and resilient future. One of my supervisors once said that sustainable tourism should not be a category of tourism because travel and tourism, no matter what kind, should be sustainable and responsible in itself. 🌟 Collaboration Across Borders: Working alongside a diverse array of stakeholders — from governmental bodies to NGOs, private sector entities, businesses, and individuals from various countries — allows me to see the power of collaboration. I have been amazed by how these stakeholders bring forward such diverse approaches to sustainable tourism. I believe that, with joined forces and diverse minds, we can thrive and drive for collective impacts for our mutual goals. 🛠️ Acquisition of Invaluable Skills: With variations of tasks and assignments, I have learned a number of skills, from soft skills like communication and adaptability to hard skills like project proposal writing and carbon emission calculation. It was such a great time getting to hone new skills while practicing the old ones at the same time! 🔍 Self-Discovery: One of the most important lessons learned was about myself. Throughout the internship journey, there were times I faced challenges, but that was when I could see my strengths and weaknesses. I had the opportunity to observe how I handle different situations, and I found that to be very invaluable self-discovery. 🎯 Shaping Future Goals: This journey has been fundamental in shaping my future aspirations. Equipped with newfound knowledge, experiences, and a deeper understanding of myself, I become more confident in utilizing my new skill sets and pursuing my passions and purposes. For those of you who are interested in sustainability and tourism and opportunities like mine, PATA is a great place to learn more about it! 🤩 If you want to be a part of the PATA internship program and sustainability journey, please visit https://lnkd.in/gJSUsXXE #Sustainability #SocialResponsibility #InternshipJourney #PATAExperience
