Three milestones at work this week: 1. Celebrated my three year anniversary with CSL Behring with my team at our North America Business Meeting in Tampa, Florida. 2. Was honored, alongside two of my close friends and peers with the "Leadership" award for our contributions to our team and company in delivering the highest level of patient focus. 3. I was advanced within our career ladder to Senior MSL. at CSL, (this is achieved by accomplishing KPI milestones, not just by years of tenure within the company or industry) Regarding the Leadership Award: It does not sound as flashy from a "Pharma Brag Book" nor is it as lucritive from a compensation perspective compared to a President's Club or Circle of Excellence...(not that I am complaining about winning COE last year). As I reflect on what this recognition means to me, I can't help but to return to the thought process that recognitions such as this Leadership Award, and The Collaboration Award I received at a prior company just hits differently. I feel that when we recognize values that lead to long term success within a team, as well as the more prestigious personal accolades mentioned earlier, you create a culture of support and a "team first" mentality while still motivating everyone to continue to grow and lean into challenges. And I acknowledge that by working in pharma, we should always strive to grab that "brass ring" that is proof of being a consistant top performer to assure job security as well as long term company goal obtainment. I also recognize that covid, the lockdown and work from home changed many team dynamics and in some cases, appears to have reduced the trust and cross functional understanding between various teams in a company. Perhaps more thought and resources could be allocated to recognize those on teams that achieve these interpersonal and collaborative recognitions as a way to reset the team dynamic within the current reality, in which we operate. I've heard the old saying, "Happy Wife Equals a Happy Life" and perhaps similarly, commercial success can be linked to the quality of the interpersonal relationships of our cross-functional teams in pharma. (Please excuse the gender/role specific language if your personal identification differs) I apologise for the "Deep Thoughts" from 35000 ft as I fly back to New Orleans. Maybe I should take a nap.

This week is my one year anniversary with Roche as the Chief Diversity Officer, and as I look back I want to share a few reflections. When I first joined Roche we began with a change journey and worked as a team to understand our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) strategy, mission and values and identify places for further capability building across the company. I see and understand that the world around us is becoming more complex and intense, and we are faced with challenges from world crises, to our own internal struggles on an almost daily basis. While we can’t change all the things happening around us, I believe we have the opportunity to actively influence the culture at Roche which can have a real impact on our people, our patients and on society. To me, this is what matters most about the work we do and what also has the potential to make lasting change. Throughout this year, I have learned firsthand that the work we do requires empathy, compassion and open-mindedness. To show up in this way we must also take care of ourselves, wellbeing is a must. I encourage and support my team in taking care and nurturing these parts of their lives, and I commit to continuing to lead by example and do the same. As leaders, I believe it is our responsibility to approach our work as bus drivers. We need to know the direction we are headed, be prepared and plan for many stops along the way, and know that some people stay on the bus, some new people may join and some people may stop riding the bus altogether. Change is certain, but staying the course can help to manage the things we can't control along the way, just like a bus driver.  As I look toward the end of 2024 and into next year, our DE&I purpose remains focused on embracing the unique power of each person to transform the lives of patients and society, through access to clinical trials, driving an inclusive environment, and advancing positive change in society. And I remain energized in driving these efforts. Today, I bring you not a reflection on the challenging times we live in, but rather on costs, opportunity, and value (taking the chance to share what I've been up to lately and what I’ve been working on for some time because, let's be honest, LinkedIn is also for that, right?). What motivates (or should motivate, when able to choose the position to apply for) someone to apply for a job? This is a less controversial yet equally important topic from my professional point of view; what it means to be an employee of an organization where both parties have established goals and objectives. This week, I participated in the Foundation Program in Prague with Johnson & Johnson where I had the opportunity to learn more on the Science of Energy, EndoMech, the portfolio of the business unit, as well as competitors, develop strategies for identifying needs, and address the challenges in clinical daily practice. It is rewarding to connect the dots and get 11 instead of 2+2 because we're not just talking about something definitive: we are also developing the CREDO and team spirit that cut across various positions, developing technical and linguistic skills in complex domains such as anatomy, innovation, and medical technology. Perhaps simplistic, but I believe there are two fundamental pillars that define human beings: tangible recognition and intangible recognition. Undoubtedly, we need to pay the bills to survive, but beyond that, I believe we also need to live. At least to the extent that I feel part of a society and community, that I feel I contribute and add value to a group with the same purpose. Grateful for the opportunity and above all for investing in me and in us. Being part of an organization is more than just waiting for the paycheck when we add value and are seen as long-term investments. “For all you love” ❤️

Today is my 13th anniversary at Astellas Pharma. At 36 years old, that’s effectively 1/3rd of my life. A few takeaways - Success in this industry can look wildly different depending on your strengths, but top reps typically fall into one of these categories: Brute Force 💪🏼 - first on the road, last to get home. Creates more opportunities than their peers. Data Sniper 📈 - knows their territory like the back of their hand. Sees opportunities ahead of time and nothing falls through the cracks. Consistently puts themselves in the places with highest potential for outcome Clinician 🥼- Understands and anticipates the needs of HCPs, staff, amd patients. consistently delivers tailored reinforcement and support. This rep becomes an asset to the clinic and is viewed as a partner Charismatic 💁🏻♂️💁🏻♀️ - rapidly gains trust and builds rapport. This rep has great access where others may not and can be more direct when closing for business One thing is very consistent - reps that are driven by improving patient outcomes do very well. Today, I want to introduce you to Wendi Carroll, Pharm D Wendi and I met in the DIY Influence community. As part of a collaboration project, I became intrigued by Wendi's background and experiences living and working overseas, as well as her transition from pharmacy to the biotech industry. Wendi was kind enough to answer a few questions, and I wanted to share her story with you. While living in the UK and volunteering at the USAF base's pharmacy, Wendi was unable to be hired as a civilian pharmacist. Obtaining licensure in the UK was a daunting process. Unsure of how long they would be stationed in England, Wendi began looking for different roles, ultimately landing at Amgen. In a moment of serendipity, the role was available as another military spouse was returning to the US. The rich experience of living and working overseas has taught Wendi a great deal. It made her much more aware of different cultures and how different those cultures and environments can be, even in nations that are close geographically. Her time living overseas proved invaluable when returning to the US to manage global teams who come from different backgrounds and work in different time zones. Her experiences have made her seek out new opportunities and to learn as much as she can about the cultures of the teams that she leads. The last question that I asked Wendi was about her work in the rare disease community. I would like to share her quote with you verbatim: "The patient communities in the rare disease space are incredible. The activism and engagement within their communities is amazing, they fight every day to find cures, educate others on their rare disease, and let nothing stop them. I have met patients and their parents over the last 6 years who have been an inspiration and reinforce why I started in the pharmacy field in the first place. It is all about helping people live their best lives." Wendi's story taught me: ✅ The importance of cultural intelligence ✅ Always be curious and eager to learn ✅ Our careers are not linear. December is typically a transition month. This year, it means I have left my first job in industry at Novo Nordisk, and am waiting for my new job to start in January.    🔶 Transition can be daunting: Am I sure I want to leave known waters behind and embark on a new journey? Or is it in fact the necessary, logical continuation of the sail? You will only know when you try. But don't try blindly. I did a lot of research before making this decision, and I could not be more convinced that this is the right time for the next chapter.    🔶 Transition means #reflection : I feel a lot of #gratitude towards my past close and distant colleagues, mentors, managers for all they taught me. Especially from Emma Henriksson and Morten Fog-Tonnesen I learnt that true #leadership looks at the person, inspires and empowers colleagues, holds their back free from tasks they never signed up for, challenges them when they want to be challenged - while never loosing the sight and purpose of making drugs for patients who need them.   🔶 Transition means looking ahead: What were the eye openers in the past, of which I will take the learnings to my new work place? What have I learnt about working together with many stakeholders of differing interests and personalities that I will be conscious of in the future? How to apply these learnings might be quite different, but it means that some unknown unknowns turn into known unknowns. I will also aim to practice my curiosity even more, particularly when it involves communication and people. Which is always 😉   🔶 Transition also means #introspection : What are your core values? Are you really true to them? Or are your actions missing the target unintentionally? While I want to improve the health of people, I often neglected my own health. Are you living a company culture that encourages colleagues to look after themselves? Are you talking about reducing stress, while also living this as a role model?   Happy reflection, introspection, and looking ahead for all your projects and new endeavours! #careerdevelopment #growthmindset #gratitude
