On September 28th, California enacted a first of its kind textile extended producer responsibility (#EPR) law known as the Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024 (SB-707). The bill establishes a statewide EPR program for #apparel and #textile articles. The main provisions are: 1. Producers of covered products must join a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) 2. The PRO will implement a plan (approved by the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery) for the collection, transportation, repair, sorting, and recycling of covered products. 3. PROs will be required to submit annual reports to the department. 4. The bill creates the Textile Stewardship Recovery Fund and Textile Stewardship Recovery Penalty Account to fund the department's implementation and enforcement cost. 6. Non-compliance will result in civil penalties. In addition, the bill will require the PRO to assess and address the presence of #PFAS and other chemicals of concern - including the actions to be taken to avoid contamination in the recycling process, and the availability of end markets for recycled material that could not be remanufactured into textiles or textile articles in California. https://lnkd.in/eUPhTJx3

Looks like PFAS reporting has come to Canada! On July 27th Environment and Climate Change Canada published a notice requiring mandatory reporting of manufactured and imported PFAS, and PFAS containing items, during 2023. Businesses will only have 6 months to gather and report information with the reporting window closing January 29, 2025.
