Switch Networks, Keep Your Number - Why is Namibia not introducing number portability? The Namibia Consumer Protection Group welcomes number portability for ushering in greater freedom of choice, spurring competition and encouraging technological innovation. LNP removes barriers to switching and provides consumers with a greater choice of carriers and the convenience of keeping their existing numbers. It benefits the ratepayer, the consumer. Whether they have switched cell phone carriers or not, customers have already started reaping the benefits of lower prices and attractive packages offered by wireless carriers as inducements to keep customers from switching. From today, vulnerable people in the UK, including the elderly and the disabled, will be better protected when switching from analogue to digital landlines thanks to new government measures. It comes as network operators joined phone providers in signing a charter which demands that people who rely on personal alarms to call for help are not left stranded during the migration. UK businesses, do not wait, act now! In the week that BT switched off it's 3G mobile masts we are now also into the Openreach exchange switch-off phase with Deddington in Oxfordshire being the first exchange to have PSTN services fully switched off in March 2024. WLR, PSTN, SMPF and ADSL services in these exchanges will need to be regraded to newer product options and customers using WLR services in this exchange (and those switched off thereafter) face service cessation unless they opt for the recommended upgrades. This is a huge shift in the delivery of communications in the UK with the switch to all IP happening whether you want it or not, therefore if you have any of these legacy services deployed in your business you need to start the process of moving to modern all-IP services now, do not wait, the deadline date for EOL on these services is coming.

📡 Shared Rural Network update 📡 In 2020, EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone agreed with the UK Government to improve mobile coverage by creating a Shared Rural Network, committing to provide good 4G coverage to 88% of the UK landmass by June 2024 and 90% by January 2027. We've found that: 📞 EE, O2, and Vodafone met their 4G coverage commitments. 📶 Three fell short, but claims it met these obligations later in August. 🌐 Over 78% of UK landmass is now covered by all four networks. Hello friends and colleagues. I’m pleased to share this important blog from CTIA about the wireless industry’s commitment to supporting survivors of domestic violence. Domestic violence affects millions every year. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, over one-third of women and one-fourth of men in the U.S. will face domestic violence at some point in their lives. Survivors often struggle with shared mobile service contracts, which are frequently controlled by their abusers. This makes it challenging for survivors to establish their own communication lines and devices. Affordability is another major hurdle for those looking to set up independent communication services or exit family plans controlled by their abusers. To address these issues, the Safe Connections Act of 2022 (SCA) was enacted to support survivors of domestic abuse by ensuring they have reliable, safe, and affordable telecommunications services. The bill passed through the House and Senate with bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Biden on December 7, 2022. This federal law helps survivors swiftly and safely separate from shared wireless service plans with their abusers. The Federal Communications Commission was tasked with implementing rules under the SCA. These rules, detailed in a Report and Order published in December 2023, address the following: • Line Separation: Survivors may independently separate mobile phone lines from their abusers. • Submission Requirements: Survivors must submit specific information when requesting a line separation under the SCA. • Employee Training: Providers are required to train employees to assist survivors. • Call and Text Records: To protect survivors, providers must omit records of calls and texts to domestic violence support hotlines from consumer-facing logs. • Lifeline Program: Survivors may receive support from the Lifeline program for up to six months. I had the privilege of working with the team at UScellular that developed and implemented this solution. It quickly became apparent how valuable the Safe Connections Act is for everyday people who happen to be survivors. Through this new process, UScellular has been able to help people in ways that weren’t possible before.
