Taking a break today, but work calls! Despite it being a day off, urgent tasks require a site visit to discuss construction details and sequences with our contractor and subcon. Afterwards, I’ll draft instructions for our contractor based on today’s outcome. This is a key part of our workflow. When I first started here ten years ago, I was used to consultants leading projects. However, I’ve come to appreciate our approach—it’s efficient and highly productive, especially for fast-track fit-out projects. Through numerous site visits like this, I’ve gained invaluable experience and honed my skills in problem-solving and technical know-how. It can be exhausting at times, but looking back, the growth and knowledge gained have been truly rewarding. #ProjectManagement #SiteExperience #ProjectEfficiency #ContinuousLearning

As with lots of things civil, the things that make our sector great also pose their own challenges, and right up there at the top of the challenges is managing people. This was probably the area that took up most of my time as a project manager. It wouldn’t be too bad if we had a consistent stream of work coming in, but as any contractor knows, work levels go up and down. We managed the ups and the downs by doing dayworks for other contractors in our slow periods and engaging contract labour and equipment from other contractors when we were busy and short on men. While we were all competing for work, construction is a tight community and it’s in everyone’s interest to work together. While this meant we could utilise our people and equipment better, it created its own headaches. We had to: ➤ Manage our own workforce and keep them busy ➤ Manage head contracts, and ensure we delivered within budget ➤ Engage and manage subcontractors on day rates and keep track of their hours ➤ Engage with other head contractors to get our people As most contractors know, this is a big headache to manage. I managed this with spreadsheets and folders full of paperwork that had to be processed and summarised for paying subbies and getting paid by head contractors. It was challenges like this that led us to create Varicon to automate all of this workflow. What we’ve built is the solution I wished that I had. If you’d like to see how Varicon can free you up to focus on winning work, recruiting great people and delivering outstanding results for your customers get in touch!

The term "OPEN FRONT" in construction and road projects. Refers to the start of new work on construction and road sites so that these works are open and forward-facing. This means that new activities and equipment are carried out in an organized and exposed manner, making them easy to access and monitor and ensuring that there is no interruption in the contractor's activities/equipment and manpower/. In the context of construction and roads, the following should be noted: - Starting a new phase of the project: such as opening a new road or starting the construction of a new part of the facility, while ensuring that the new sites are organized and open to facilitate work and monitoring. - Organizing new work sites: Arranging new areas so that they are open and prepared in a way that allows easy movement and access to resources and equipment. - Planning and design: Developing clear and detailed plans for the new work phases, so that they are visible and understandable to all workers and supervisors. *- This approach helps ensure that work proceeds effectively and efficient, while reducing the chaos and complications that may arise when opening new work sites.

Construction Professionals: Don't be afraid to stop work on a project (provided you have the contractual and factual right). Too many times contractors and subcontractors don't want to make another party upset and end up putting themselves way behind the 8-ball. I've seen contractors work for months and months without getting paid based on verbal promises of payment because they think it will look bad if they stop. In the end, they are effectively financing the project.
