Gender and Child Affairs in the Office of the Prime Minister is also tasked with leading the National Policy on Gender and Development which recognises youth as a special interest group and the National Child Policy. Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty require greater youth participation and leadership. Yet, it calls for something more far-reaching in the paradigm of development. In our context, young women under the age of 35 are disproportionately the victims of sexual violence. The National Strategic Action Plan on Gender-based Violence and Sexual Violence, 2023-2027 includes youth engagement for a peaceful present and future in T&T. The Youth-Child-Gender Nexus of Development is a recognition that all social and economic development is premised on what we invest in youth and children. The protection of human rights, elderly care, menstrual equity, quality education and healthy social attitudes begin with youth and children. Youth and children are not just beneficiaries or decision-makers in development – rather, they are an essential category for investment to construct national development and the quality of life in national development and the global community. https://lnkd.in/eusmsrYd

Mapping the cost of non-Europe: Europe could uphold citizens’ rights and equality Equal treatment is a fundamental value of the European Union and all EU citizens should enjoy the same EU rights. However, we could do more to protect citizens' rights and generate benefits for society. The European Parliament called for more EU action to better protect our fundamental rights. One of the most promising would be tackling gender inequality in the labour market. Our study ‘Ten ways that Europe could do more for you - Mapping the cost of non-Europe’ assesses the potential benefits of more EU action through key policy proposals. These benefits reflect economic gains, as well as gains in terms of social and fundamental rights, and also protection of the environment. Today is World Day of Social Justice, an international day recognising the need to promote social justice. This includes efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, unemployment, human rights, and social protections, something we at University of Galway take very seriously, in our efforts to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, around these concerns. Organisations such as the United Nations make statements and present plans for greater social justice by tackling poverty, social and economic exclusion and unemployment. World Day of Social Justice has been observed on 20th February annually, since 2009, and we are proud to be part of the positive change, for equality, diversity and inclusion here at University of Galway. #UniversityOfGalway #Galway #SocialJustice #WorldDayOfSocialJustice #UnitedNations #SustainableDevelopmentGoals

🌐 Empowering youth On May 14th, I attended a webinar focusing on the #engagement of #young people. In today's interconnected world, engaging and empowering youth is more crucial than ever. That’s why projects like #YAAAs - Youth to eeshape the World– Youth as Advocates and Agents of transformative Actions in social inclusion and environment protection. - and organizations such as the #UN Human Rights Office (#OHCHR) play a significant role. It was an insightful meeting with Helen Griffiths - from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) - , who explained the UN Human Rights Office's (OHCHR) commitment to youth rights. She highlighted OHCHR's collaborations with youth organizations, human rights education initiatives, and the integration of youth concerns into international mechanisms. Key initiatives include the #HumanRights75initiative and the #WorldProgrammeforHumanRightsEducation, both aimed at empowering young people and amplifying their role in global human rights advocacy. Here are some key concepts highlighted from my intervention during the webinar on youth engagement initiatives: 🤝 Social inclusion 📣 Advocacy and education: This includes increasing intercultural dialogue, enhancing network communication, and leveraging digital innovation to engage and educate. 🔗 Global and local engagement Listening actively to the young voice and taking it into account is a foundational pillar toward youth engagement #YouthEngagement #SocialInclusion #EnvironmentalProtection #HumanRights #ActiveCitizenship #Empowerment #UN

Feminist and women’s rights organizations receive less than 1% of ODA, gender-related aid and foundation grants combined despite the critical role they play in delivering social and gender transformation. Exacerbating this problem are regulatory frameworks and aid conditionalities that place restrictions on foreign funding that goes to civil society organizations. Restrictions and conditionalities impact feminist and women’s rights organizations' ability to respond to gaps in public service delivery, including gaps related to health and SRHR, education, care, and more. We need to end restrictions and conditionalities and increase women’s rights and feminist organizations’ access to long-term and flexible funding. #FeministFinancing #CSW68 #WhatGirlsWant #WhatWomenWant #FeministFuturesHIV
