Odum was an intellectual titan in the field of Systems Ecology and was an influence to Jacque Fresco. In this book, Odum authors these words of warning to global civilization. Beyond a warning, he offers advice for how to decrease our impact on the environment and carrying capacity of Earth. This was Odum's final publication and departing message to humanity. It was an inconvenient vision for the end of 'growth'. A study investigating maximum body size in fossil species, which uses T.rex as a case study. We must reconsider the role of maintenance and care in shaping the future of forest restoration projects in the Global South. Maintenance at large remains a neglected aspect under a generic assumption — once projects are successfully established over a 5 or 10 year term, the local communities will take care of those forests, and the usefulness of these forests will endure in perpetuity. This assumption is deeply problematic. From the Himalaya, our research casts attention to the fragility of these promised futures. Growing up a student, Platypus was always among the top go-to places for anthropology of science, technology, and the environment. In a new research article, Matthias Eckardt, Jorge Mateu, and Mehdi Moradi (pictured) have introduced a new way to analyze events happening on networks such as streets, rivers, plant root systems, and leaf veins 🛣️🌊🌱🍁 They study events that come with time-varying detailed information (functions). In particular, they have developed several mark correlation functions to uncover how these events are spread and connected across space by focusing on the time-varying functions. About this time last year, I completed my Master's Thesis at Akdeniz University titled 'An Interpretation of the Architecture of “Desert Kites” and “Wheels” in the Black Desert of Jordan: Cultural and Environmental Relations.' This research explores the unique architectural forms known as Desert Kites and Wheels, exploring their intricate relationship with the natural and environmental context in the Black Desert of Jordan. The thesis examines the deep connections to the unique surrounding landscape, offering valuable insights into historical and environmental interdependencies. Also, emphasizing the role of topography, ecology, and human interaction with the environment in shaping these monumental structures. Three days that changed the way I see moss—and how it will shape the future of my designs🌱 “It is the office of the naturalist no less than of the poet to call attention to objects that are neglected because they are familiar or obscure, to show the beauty and the charm that lie hidden in common things, to give eyes where there have been no eyes, to dispel the lethargy of the mind and to quicken the spirit to admiration and to love.” —Sir Edward Fry and Agnes Fry, 1911 I’ve just returned from an unforgettable experience at OSU’s Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island, where I spent 3 days immersed in the world of bryophytes, mostly mosses. I had the privilege of learning from Dr. Robert Klips and Lisa Kutschbach-Brohl, whose expertise and passion for these often-overlooked plants opened my eyes to their intricate beauty and ecological value. Exploring mosses on Gibraltar and the surrounding islands, combined with hands-on lab work, was a game changer for my design approach. This deeper understanding of moss identification and ecology will allow me to enrich my garden designs with lush textures and colors, while boosting soil stability, nutrient cycling, and invertebrate microhabitats. I was impressed by the expertise of my fellow participants, many of whom were professors or researchers in closely adjacent fields. Their knowledge and varied perspectives made this experience even more enriching—we even wrote moss poetry together in our free time! Grateful to Dr. Klips and Lisa for creating such a rich learning environment. I’m excited to integrate these insights into my work and see how they shape my designs.

This spring, Makery co-produced issue 6 of the occasional newspaper The Laboratory Planet. This issue imagines a peasant and neo-peasant future, invented by global peasants, organised in diverse territories, cultivating biotopes that are more heterogeneous, more democratic and therefore more habitable. The central section is devoted to the recent Soil Assembly initiative, and develops some of the experiences, reflections and surveys gathered within this emerging network.
