Tired of not getting invited to interviews? It could be that your application materials aren’t *sticky* enough. S: Skill - based. Your resume should highlight skills used or gained in your work, not a list of tasks completed. T: Tailored resume / cover letter for the job at hand. Recruiters can tell when you’re copy pasting with no forethought. I: Intentional! I get it, we need to get paid to cover our living expenses and fun - but if you aren’t clear in your application why you are applying for a role and why you’d be a good candidate to interview.. it’ll be hard for recruiters and hiring managers to tell. C: Confident. I know, we don’t always feel like we’re that one when it come to jobs. However, confidently showcasing your abilities is key. K: Keep it real. As the Queen of “HR speak,” we love to throw around corporate jargon - but honestly - keep it real. Use language that comes naturally to you and is aligned with the industry — otherwise it will not read as authentic. Y: YOU. At the end of the day, you’re the one getting invited to an interview - not a representative. Make sure your application materials are representing *your* career and not just want you think people want to read. Stop calling it a "resume" when you're trying to wrap things up! Ever found yourself saying "Let me resume" when you're about to summarize something? You're not alone. This mix-up happens all the time, thanks to our tricky friend, the "false friend" in language—words that look or sound similar in two languages but differ significantly in meaning. Resume (re-su-mé): It's what you hand over in a job interview, detailing your work experience, skills, and education. Hoping to impress? That’s your go-to document! Summarize (sum-ma-rize): This is what you do when you want to give the short version of a long story. Think of it as the TL;DR of conversations. Next time you're tempted to say "resume" when catching up on the latest drama or explaining a concept, remember: you're not handing out your job credentials, you're just keeping it brief. Let's save the resumes for the hiring managers and stick to summarizing in conversations. Keep it concise, keep it simple!

BEFORE YOU ATTEND THAT INTERVIEW... At a recent semi-formal recruiting session for a major hospitality business with 2 of its top management staff, I was yet again reminded of the importance of knowing how to talk about yourself. We saw folks with good CVs but lacked the necessary ingredients to communicate their values I remember how we unanimously picked someone with low experience simply because she said " I have not done that before, but I'm a fast learner and will do well once I'm taught". The smile on our faces was instant and looked planned. I'll tell you for free, the business space does not favour people who are silent about how good they are! . . . The story of interviews teaches you that you have very limited time to impress those recruiting especially when it is for entry-level positions. Sometimes recruiters have as many as 50-100 people to decide from and your job is to ensure that those first minutes count for everything. It's interesting to see people stutter and have very few inspiring statements about themselves when they're asked the famous question "Tell me about yourself?" The truth is... I did too. I wondered what exactly was I to say that was good enough for the ears of those interviewing me. Was it my family life, academic inclination, things I've achieved or just a general talk on the kind of person Jesse is? It took me a while to learn and master how to talk about myself and I'm glad I did. . . . As you apply for jobs this year, talk smart, look smart, think smart! Be intelligent in your response.
