Social media managers are not digital marketers!
I don’t understand why hiring managers think that social media managers are digital marketers.
I applied to a company for a social media manager position. They called me for an interview, and during the interview, they said that I would have to run Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads, manage social media platforms, create content calendars, and handle Google Analytics and social media platform insights for pages and posts. And for all of this, they offered just 25k. I was so surprised to hear this from them, especially since such a professional company could make such an offer.
Social media managers and digital marketers are two separate positions, so please don’t lump them together. If you expect someone to handle all of these tasks, at least offer a higher salary package. We’re not interns, We’re experience candidate, so please treat us accordingly.

Very important point. I would also add that Digital marketer have a social media manager experience sometimes but the field is much wider than creating content and executing it.

Had this conversation recently and it’s something that needs to be talked more about.
Many employers do not understand the tasks and role. Social media managers aren’t just posting nice photos. They have to research what is trending in the industry they work for, what is happening in said industry, what their company’s target audience wants to see, how well they performed on social media the previous month/quarter etc. and then bring all of that information together to figure out the next goals and strategy.
On top of that, they then have to draft up a content calendar for the upcoming month, which consists of carousels, posts, reels, stories, etc. Once that’s done, you have to create the content—visual AND copy. (And if there’s no content creator or copywriter then you’re doing that yourself!!)
Lastly, they then have to engage across all platforms, (responding to comments, checking DMs, answering questions) review analytics, schedule, make sure tools are working, etc!
IT IS A LOT and it is insane that employers expect someone to do that job (with little pay) PLUS email management, website management, public relations, advertising, communications, graphic design, and expect you to have everything done by EOD.
As I have been working on my own digital marketing agency and working with clients, I’ve come to the point where I want to drop certain services because I do not want to burnout or feel overwhelmed. The great thing of being an entrepreneur is that I am my own boss and I understand the value and time it takes to do certain projects.
My goal is ultimately to scale my agency and hire many more amazing people who will ONLY have one title and role because that’s how it should be.

Oh, Thank god somebody said that. I would like to add up the same point with Digital Marketers and Graphic Designers too. The one who is a Digital Marketer CANNOT KNOW how to design and that's normal. Please don't mix it up in your mind😮💨
People really need to know that these are definitely and solely different positions and skills. Please value.

Dear Hiring Managers,
Just a friendly reminder: Social Media Managers are not digital marketers. Surprising, I know!
I recently applied for a Social Media Manager role. They called me in for an interview, and I thought, "Great! A professional company." But then the plot twist: they expected me to run Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads, manage all social media platforms, whip up content calendars, and dive into Google Analytics and social media insights—all for the low, low price of 35k.
I had to double-check if they meant a Social Media Manager or an entire marketing department! But hey, who wouldn’t want to juggle multiple roles for the salary of an intern?
So, just a quick PSA: if you’re looking for a multi-talented unicorn who does it all, maybe, just maybe, consider offering more than pocket change. We're experienced professionals, not magicians.

Hope this hits the right note!
Observation in the market:
Recruiting Junior roles at the moment has never been more challenging:
Why?
Juniors for the first time have a really clear expectations/boundaries when it comes to work, they need to align with the values of the organisation, it needs to have flexibility, purpose and pays well.
If you are a company that thinks just posting a job you are going to get a ton of Juniors applying- think again.
To give you context, I know a company that has been looking for a social media executive for almost 2 months- Why? Because the requirement is 5 days in the office.
If you are struggling with a Junior- have you considered a part-time more senior hire?

Think content creation and strategy are the same? Think again. 👀
Social Media Managers and Content Creators play very different roles.
♟️Social Media Managers handle strategy, engagement, and analytics.
👽Content Creators bring those strategies to life through creative visuals.
Both roles are critical, but they require different skills.
Do Marketing hiring managers expect one person to handle it all? Probably. The job market is competitive, so the more technical skills and work experience you have, the better.
💡And if you need more of that, JobPrepped gives you:
* In-demand technical skills that hiring managers are looking for
* Real-world work experience to showcase on your resume
* Confidence to tackle both roles if needed in today’s fast-paced market
👇 How do you juggle both roles?

In my experience, some of the most remarkable hires didn't fit the traditional mold.
I once hired a social media associate who didn’t have relevant industry experience, but blew me away with their infectious can-do attitude and quick thinking during the interview. Fast forward a year, not only did they crush the social media role, but they also took charge of content creation, copywriting, and even managed our PR agency.
Similarly, another direct report initially hired for partnership marketing faced a pivot in our strategy and was placed in a new role they had no background in. Undeterred, they dove in headfirst with unwavering dedication, defying doubts and upskilling into an expert in record time, becoming one of my indispensable right hand partner.
Yet, I've noticed a trend: companies playing it safe by hiring only those with direct experience in a specific role or the exact same industry. While it may seem like a shortcut to gaining a candidate that can hit the ground running, it often overlooks the untapped potential of adaptable talent.
Let's rethink hiring. Let's embrace diverse backgrounds and transferable skills. Sometimes all people need is a chance to surpass your expectations. 💡

Today was an interesting yet challenging day. I had an interview for a Social Media Manager position. During the discussion, the interviewer started asking questions about Ads, ROAS, ROI, and CPR.
While I have a solid understanding of social media management, these specific terms are generally more aligned with performance marketing or paid ad specialists. It made me wonder why job descriptions are often not clear about the actual responsibilities of the role.
It’s disheartening when our skills are undervalued simply because expectations are misaligned. Social media management involves content creation, strategy, engagement, analytics, and community building. It’s a completely different domain from handling paid campaigns or deep advertising metrics.
This experience left me questioning:
👉 Are hiring managers and recruiters truly clear about the roles they’re hiring for?
👉 How can we ensure our skills are seen in the right light without being underrated?
For anyone hiring for similar roles, please take the time to define job responsibilities clearly. And for all job seekers out there, don’t lose confidence when such situations arise—it’s a learning opportunity to better advocate for your skills.
Have you faced a similar situation? Let’s discuss in the comments. 👇
