“SHIFTING SANDS: Kashmir’s sand mining crisis” In Kashmir, the river Jhelum, its tributaries, and the flood plains are the only source of sand, boulders and gravel for construction. Sand mining supports the livelihoods of nearly 21,000 families. But illegal mining by unlicensed contractors and environmental violations by licensed entities could jeopardise river ecosystems and the livelihoods of thousands if they continue unchecked. It has been almost 8 years since in-basin frac sand mining in the Permian took off. Over this time, the Permian Basin frac sand mines have been steadily getting safer and safer as the industry matures. One safety metric, Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), shows that the in-basin frac sand mines are starting to become safer than the Texas state average (for mines). This is a significant milestone for the industry, and one we should be proud of as we continue to zero.
