As Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) from March 2020 to July 2023, he made significant contributions to one of the largest school systems in the country. Under Davis’ leadership, HCPS experienced remarkable improvements, including a rise in the district’s state academic ranking from 35th to 19th, the highest in its history. He successfully guided the district through the COVID-19 pandemic and overcame a deficit of more than $150 million. He also played a crucial role in reducing the number of underperforming schools, improving the graduation rate from 87% to 89%, the highest in the district’s history. One of his greatest accomplishments was reducing 28 historically “D” and “F” schools to only five over his 39-month tenure. #education #leadership #AI #learning

Principals and superintendents, this is a full-page ad I’m taking for your benefit: Please STOP with the fad-based leadership and whimsically-changing priorities. The Academic Office in my last large-district leadership position, in the midst of a strategic turnaround in mathematics and an infusion of new resources on which were all trying to align (and offer support), suddenly had us pivot and join a whole bunch of very abstract meetings—in the middle of the year—on “disciplinary literacy.” They didn’t seem to realize that we were already supporting (in principle) what disciplinary literacy is aiming to do—but without all of the additional mwetings and new frameworks. We were already overworked and under-supported. They just liked using the new buzzwords, it seemed to me. And the same buzzword-fascination is what is driving #AI #tutoring and a whole bunch of mid-year, out of the blue ed tech mandates—not coincidentally, which are unsupported by research. I’ll say it again: stop the fad-based, shifting-priority approach to leadership. Support teachers. Trust teachers. Provide real, strategic support and allow time for growth. #teachers #teaching #edtech #superintendents #principals #leadership #fadbased

Founder & CEO at The Ability Challenge | Supporting educators in delivering research-based special education | Partnering with schools, districts, & networks to develop authentically inclusive school communities
#Specialeducation is at a crossroads: play it safe with limited resources, or embrace #systemicchange. Which path will we choose? The U.S. Department of Education's latest report is stark: only 20 states met IDEA requirements this year. As another exhausting school year closes, it's clear that incremental changes aren't cutting it. This crisis is our opportunity for transformation. That's why I'm doubling down on our mission at The Ability Challenge (ABC) as we head into summer. Our approach addresses these systemic needs... 🔍 Root Cause Analysis: Uncovering systemic issues 🏫 School-Centric Model: Tailored solutions, not one-size-fits-all 💪 Capacity Building: Empowering for sustainable improvement 📊 Data-Driven Decisions: Turning compliance into growth 🤝 Collaborative Approach: Fostering inclusive environments 🧠 Disability-Informed Practices: Enhancing teaching strategies 🚀 Leadership Support: Navigating complex challenges The path to meeting IDEA requirements isn't about quick fixes—it's about systemic change that alleviates burdens on educators and leaders. 🔥 Hot Take: Meeting IDEA requirements should be our starting point, not our end goal. I'm curious: 📣 What unconventional approaches have made a real difference in special education? 📣 How can we balance innovation with resource constraints? 📣 What's your biggest barrier to systemic change, and how might we overcome it? Let's discuss where we go from here. #SpecialEducation #SystemicChange #IDEACompliance #EducationalInnovation #inclusionmatters #theabilitychallenge P.S. Want to dive deeper? Let's connect. ABC is committed to supporting transformative change in special education.

Students are accelerating, but most of the nation’s districts are still chasing pre-pandemic peaks. Our 2023 State of Student Learning report evaluates student achievement across the pre- and post- pandemic landscape. While student performance is on the rise, the pace is not reaching pre- pandemic levels quickly enough. The research shows that students can reach grade-level proficiency despite falling behind. This year's Tri-State Innovation and Leadership Summit is dedicated to addressing the challenges of interrupted learning and fostering academic momentum. We aim to create a collaborative environment for shared insights covering a variety of topics and offer collaborative data deep-dives, allowing participants to explore and strategize on how high-quality instructional materials can directly impact student performance. This event will feature impactful keynotes from leading educational experts, including: -Tom Burton, Former Superintendent, Princeton City Schools -Glendaliz Almonte, Director of Content and Implementation -Pete Swerdzewski, Senior Director, Research and Assessment -Ken Tam, Associate Vice President, Assessment and Implementation Promising to be an informative and inspiring gathering, this symposium will bring together professionals dedicated to advancing education. Your presence will contribute significantly to the success of our collaborative efforts.
