Learning Math: Building Mental Strength and Flexibility 💪 Just like building muscle, the more we practice math, the stronger our understanding becomes. The true beauty of mathematics lies in its interconnectedness—there are often multiple paths to arrive at the same solution. At DPS, we encourage our students to explore, question, and view math from different perspectives. It’s through this exploration that real learning and problem-solving skills are developed. Let’s continue to nurture a mindset of curiosity and flexibility in learning! ➕🧮🟰➖ #MathMindset #GrowthMindset #ProblemSolvingSkills #LearningJourney #ExploreMath

I highly recommend attending this webinar if you can. Nicole and Sara are two of the best in the business at breaking down policy and programs into practical application.
Sara Scarbrough and I will be putting on our educator hats in less than two weeks to present at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) / National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - NCTM Joint Conference. If you happen to be attending and would like to join our interactive session that will prove cognitive similarities across Math/ELA, please stop by on Tuesday at 2:30. We’ll be chatting about the brain, quoting some Daniel Willingham, reading “interesting” texts, probably laughing a lot, and handing out some Discovery Education swag. Hope to see you there! #LitMath2024

Here’s Philip K. Dick (in 1964) describing education via AI-simulated tutors: “Several times he had visited the Public School with his son. That was different. David was at the top of his class, attending the most advanced teaching machines along the route. He stayed late, making the most of the tutorial system of which the UN was so proud. Looking at his watch, Jack saw that it was ten o’clock. At this moment, as he recalled from his visits and from his son’s accounts, David was with the Aristotle, learning the rudiments of science, philosophy, logic, grammar, poetics, and an archaic physics. Of all the teaching machines, David seemed to derive the most from the Aristotle, which was a relief; many of the children preferred the more dashing teachers at the School: Sir Francis Drake (English history, fundamentals of masculine civility) or Abraham Lincoln (United States history, basics of modern warfare and the contemporary state) or such grim personages as Julius Caesar and Winston Churchill. He himself had been born too soon to take advantage of the tutorial school system, he had gone to classes as a boy where he sat with sixty other children, and later, in high school, he had found himself listening and watching an instructor speaking over closed-circuit TV along with a class of a thousand.” (Dick, Martian Time-Slip, p. 11-12.) That’s not a million miles from our current reality. In the last six months, my World History students at #ConstellationLearningInstitute have traded ideas with AI-Socrates and AI-Confucius, and completed AI-based simulations of life in Old Kingdom Egypt and Hammurabi’s Babylon. (Grateful hat tip to Benjamin Breen for that activity.) Thankfully, they still have plenty of humans in the loop, but the potential for AI-mediated learning experiences is real. It is a *wild* time to be in education. And yes: I recognize that “contemporary life has become a Philip K. Dick novel” is not necessarily reassuring. But just because the world is getting weirder doesn’t mean we have to end up in a dystopia. Let’s make good choices!

On Wednesday 15/5, I attended a forum at AU titled “A Holistic Approach to Teaching and Learning". As the title suggested, different keynote speakers highlighted different ways to enhance the teaching process by educators and the learning process of students. They also viewed education from historical, psychological, and scientific perspectives. Here are some points that I found interesting while attending the conference: •Students’ engagement inside and outside the classroom to enhance their experience and be well-rounded. •Correlation between happiness and the quality of education. Finland is considered to be one of the happiest countries because of its educational system. •Emotions are the gatekeepers of learning during early childhood. Unfortunately, children nowadays are subjected to adulthood before acknowledging their childhood. No more children’s games, songs, and clothes that represent the innocence of childhood. •The relationship between an educator and students, where the educator represents the entire educational system. Special thanks to the Teaching and Learning center at the Australian University for hosting an informative forum! #teaching #learning #education #educator #teacher #AU #AI #tools
