#dripirrigation 4. Beds preparations Upon completion of the pipe laying process along with the fitting of the hydrants, the next step involves the marking of the beds. A standard bed is 1 metre wide (about 3 Feet), whilst the length is dependent on the design. A path (about 50 cm width) should be allocated between the beds for ease of movement during normal cultural operations. Markings are then made on the submain pipes, indicating the areas for the beds alternating the paths. Drilling is then done on the sections allocated for the beds. The number of holes is also dependent on the design, which takes into consideration among other things the type of crops to be grown. Beds can then be made with the guidance of the drilled sections.

#dripirrigation 2. Trenches digging after layout In order to supply water to the entire field efficiently, one has to come up with an appropriate design. A field can be subdivided into several smaller units to improve on the efficiency of the water supply. The different plots (segments) can be irrigated (supplied with water) at different times. Among the factors determining the numbers and size of the plots, the number of hydrants (water supply control points) and the size of the pipes are: - Distance from the water source - Height of the tank (for gravity fed systems) - Types and number of crops to be planted - Contour or profile of the field. - Available resources. - Efficiency of the system Once designed, the location of the main pipes (lines) and submain lines which distribute water will be determined. Trenches are then dug for laying the pipes, which will eventually be covered to protect them from damage during operations and also from the harsh elements.

An example of the control equipment with touch screen, for a new water well / irrigator system on a Scottish arable farm. A variable speed drive was set up to regulate water pressure in the system to a consistent 9 bar, with the pumping distance ranging from 400m to 1600m depending on which field the rain gun was irrigating. The flow rate of water from the borehole is ~50m³ per hour. The pumping system can also be turned on and off manually in the field, using a mobile phone. This was a big plus for the farmer, who could start pumping water immediately after moving the rain gun to a new field, rather than having to come back to the farmhouse. #dripirrigation 3. Laying of pipes The next step after the trenches is the laying down of the main line pipes and submain pipes. In the previous post I highlighted some of the factors affecting the choice of the pipes, among them being the budget of the farmer. Once in place the hydrants (connections for control of water flow) have to be fixed. NB. As always good quality materials and good workmanship will guarantee a longer and more seamless service.
