We need to be honest with each other about something: five years is a trend Considering only brand-new games released each year (excluding remakes, remasters, re-releases, or ports), there is an undeniable pattern of critical acclaim for role-playing games. Here are the rankings for each year, considering all titles on non-mobile platforms: 2023: 1st - Baldur's Gate 3 3rd - Diablo IV 2022: 1st - Elden Ring 2021: 1st - Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker 2019: 1st - Disco Elysium It's time to admit it: the years 2019 to 2023 belonged, more than any other genre, to ROLE-PLAYING GAMES. It fills me with joy to see that the niche nerd titles in my co-favorite genre (tied with adventure games) have become the most highly praised experiences around
Y'know, seeing this makes me wonder if RPG is too broad of a term. I mean, these are all amazing games but Disco Elysium is a drastically different game compared to Diablo 3. As food for thought, if Final Fantasy XVI is an RPG, but it plays a lot like Devil May Cry, could it be argued that Devil May Cry is an RPG?
RPGs 4 life! 🙌
I've always loved RPGs for a lot of reasons and the biggest reason is that they embody an integral life value; every learning, every obstacle we overcome, every scar we have that proves we survived, is experience (XP) that helps us become stronger/faster/smarter/more emotionally mature. While life seldom has a "level up" moment each time we cross an XP threshold, I think we can look at ending each day with even a little improvement as a soft-level in our overall progress towards becoming our ultimate (even just a little bit) OP selves.
Storytelling and immersive, indepth world building. It’s in our human nature to love and crave exploration of new worlds and experiences beyond our own. Annnnd it’s why RPGs (whether it’s on PC, Console, Handheld, or Mobile) are my forever favorite. And now there’s so many RPGs I have on my list to play once I economically stabilize! (As I stare forelornly at Macbook in sadness 😂) Now if only new age MMO RPGs can figure out their modern day sweet spot … 🥺😂😏
now as a huge fan of both RPG's and Strategy, I need more hybrids of the two!
Absolutely loving the RPG takeover. Being a lifelong Kingdom Hearts fan, I am happy with how mainstream the genre is becoming, as nobody knew it when I was growing up. To see titles like Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Tales of Arise, and Final Fantasy XVI get so much praise is amazing. I can’t wait to see what will be next, as the future is looking very bright (looking at you FFVII:Rebirth and KH4).
Hey hey Starfield is still coming and could easily knock off Baldur's Gate and Diablo At least it is a far far more ambitious title than both of them combined
Amir Satvat there is very good reason for this in the greater gaming context: no innovation/ risk- taking in AAA in other genres. Sports titles like FIFA, Madden, no innovation. FPS/TPS like CoD/Fortnite, no innovation. MMOs, almost no innovation and on a downward trend in their lifecycle. MOBAs, no innovation. Gacha titles and mobile titles, little to no innovation. RPGs demand innovation and development of new game loops and systems to be able to compete with the other genres for global share of wallet. What always gives me hope, and where the REAL innovation is, are indie games. AAA cashcows are in the process of careful management of their IPs and farming of global gamer spend through DLCs and in-game purchases, with only iterative development, if that. FIFA is a classic example. Controversial viewpoint perhaps, but I don't see evidence to the contrary. Gamers aren't dumb and know that when they see superhero skins in Fortnite and Nicki Minaj as an operator skin in CoD, that they're being farmed. Which is why BG3, while not perfect, is at least refreshing

1yDemon's Souls is a remake. 2020 had The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima though...
