But lately, I can affirm that Mumbai is definitely an “Architect’s city of dreams “ • Bombay homes: The urban fabric of the city throws a massive challenge, allowing for freedom to design mostly vertically. But at the same time, the bestest of the houses and spaces come alive in this very city. Be it the compact yet comfortable studio apartments or the sophisticated yet spacious celebrity homes- Mumbai has it all ! • Design shows/ architectural design exhibits: AD design, ID design, D-code, FOAID, Design Mumbai, to name a few… The frequency of these shows is insane!! There is some architectural design show happening every other week and the kind of exposure and experiences at these events are unmatched. • New/ Emerging trends: The industry is growing at a rapid pace and the quick adoption of emerging trends can be witnessed, be it in the material palettes, the colour palettes or with respect to the design features- all in the same city which is home to some of the top architectural firms and booming real estate • Abode to different architectural styles: With its diverse range of architectural styles, from Art Deco to Gothic revival, from the historic neighbourhoods of Colaba and Bandra which are a treasure trove of architectural heritage and from the iconic monuments like Gateway of India to the modern skyscrapers, the city is a testament to rich history and cultural diversity. Exploring the Old Streets of Ahmedabad: A Study in Urban Design As part of our group project, we explored Old Ahmedabad, analyzing key urban design principles—Visual Aesthetics, Ergonomics, Enclosure, Permeability, Proximity, Circulation & Movement, and Scale & Proportion—through real-world observations. From the visual charm of heritage facades to the ergonomic design of street seating, we saw how urban elements shape daily life. The enclosure of narrow lanes, permeability of doorways, and proximity of mixed-use spaces all contribute to a dynamic, walkable environment. Observing circulation and movement, we studied how people and vehicles interact in these organic streets, while scale and proportion reinforced the intimate character of the city. This project deepened our appreciation for human-centric urban design and the timeless wisdom embedded in historic cities. "Positioned at the intersection of commercial and residential areas in R. A. Puram, Chennai, the project Chamiers 59 embraces the dichotomy of its context. As the neighborhood transitions from its low-rise roots to a denser, vertical future, catalyzed by new planning regulations, the design serves as a response to this transformative period. The project aims to capture the dichotomy of the context and the building that brings together the dynamism of a mixed-use building with the openness and communal spirit of a traditional courtyard." While metros and Tier-1 cities are nearing saturation, Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, which account for 30-35% of demand, present immense growth potential.
