It is with the utmost joy and gratitude that I announce I graduated with a Master's degree in Criminology & Criminal Justice at Griffith University. As I am writing this, I fondly reminisce the four-year journey of doing my courses online and the anticipation I felt waiting for assessment grades to be handed back during each trimester session. Never in my life did I imagine I would begin a whole new uni trajectory online through Open Universities Australia. At one point, I thought I was done with tertiary education after 6 years of combined Law and Criminology studies at UNSW. But once I made that decision to immerse myself again into academia, I knew it was my calling. My intuition knew, and I trusted that this was the right path for me.
During my four-year stint, the most frequently asked question I received was: what is a Master's degree like? I know I can't speak on behalf of others, but from my own personal experience, it was truly life-changing. Yes, there were many sleepless nights before assignment submissions sitting in front of multiple screens and eating spoonfuls of Mayvers peanut butter from the jar, prolonged anxiety-ridden waits for assessment results, and of course the frustration with having to figure out how to reference obscure literatures. However, despite the challenges, it gave me a sense of purpose, discipline, empowerment and an outlet for creativity.
What amazed me the most about undertaking a Master's degree was the sheer amount of support from friends. People would constantly send me messages on social media - cheering me on during assessment periods and congratulating me each time I got a High Distinction (HD) grade for a course (in total 5 / 11 HDs, with some full-mark assessment grades). Thank you to those who relentlessly championed for me, and being my moral support.
Last but not least, I'd like add that we are all on different paths in life. I'm thankful that I was given this opportunity to pursue academia, and I'm even more thankful to finally achieve this milestone.
Now I'll leave you with a brilliant quote: "If you're walking down the right path and you're willing to keep walking, eventually you'll make progress" (Barack Obama).
