Many people don’t realize public schools are more segregated today than they were during the civil rights movement. They don’t realize integration is not a bygone fight but a pressing issue of this very moment. But if we don’t even acknowledge that integration is needed today, how can we understand what integration really is? Is integration simply making a perfectly balanced pie chart? Is integration really just hitting the right quotas and percentages? Or is it something more? To be fair, percentages and pie charts are part of integration, but they’re far from the full picture. Many communities believe in the importance of #inclusion for #childrenwithdisabilities but have made little progress due to limited planning time or leaders’ lack of commitment and support. Coordinating across systems is complex, so fostering relationships between early childhood system leaders and providers requires an ongoing commitment and a willingness to build systems by aligning policies and practices, providing dedicated funding and resources for inclusion, and enabling structures for educators and providers to implement evidence-based inclusive practices. Systems and providers should also commit to building strong #partnerships with communities and families and kinship caregivers—children’s first and most important teachers and advocates. #inclusionmatters
