Really satisfying content work! ·     Proof reading. ·     Making the page in Silverstripe CMS. ·     Organising files for the users – lots of files! So how do we group them and link to them with teachers’ ease of use in mind? ·     Appealing intro text that clearly explains what you get, in a few scannable words. ·     Using Photoshop to make that branding banner by repurposing existing visuals and checking client’s brand guidelines. ·     Making those drop-shadows for the preview images to the right so they lift from the page. I love doing this stuff on websites.

It still concerns me when I see cadets being allowed/encouraged/required to complete all 12 months of the sea time phase of their cadetship on the same vessel. It is evident that many sections of the shipping industry continue to prioritise convenient college calendars and cost for the sponsoring companies over the importance of an informative and meaningful cadetship? In my view it isn't fair on a cadets wellbeing but it also doesn't allow for adequate training experiences which then impacts the kind of officer (and person) that they become. The vessels I served on as cadet were not so varied, but I was not away from home for a crazy amount of time, I had different experiences from each assignment, I worked with many different people, in different regions and learned/practiced different skills. For many years, the cadetship program structure in the UK has had different sea phase stages in a multi layered sandwich course approach...... but a large proportion of cadets are from countries where the sandwich approach is extremely simple, with two slices of bread and a filling of pure pot luck......

Learning A Skilled Trade = 💵 Twenty-one-year-old Louie Leonardo represents a new generation of young workers. Because of COVID-19, Louie spent a year and a half of high school going to school virtually. He realized he wasn't cut out for a desk job. After talking to older friends and family about the workforce, he decided to forego college and learn a trade. Instead of applying to college, Louie became an HVAC apprentice. He spends eight (8) hours in the classroom and the rest of his time working for an HVAC company, making $24-32 per hour. With overtime, Louie earns $70,000 annually. When he finishes his apprenticeship in three-and-a-half years, Louie can expect to earn $132,000. If he completes four more years of night school, he could make at least $175,000. Working in the skilled trades can be demanding and not for everyone. However, with four-year college costs soaring, it could and should be a viable option for many. 💥Last year, students enrolled in vocational-focused community colleges rose 16% to its highest level since 2018.💥 Educators, community leaders, and parents - Make sure the students and young people in your community know all their options for education and training after high school.
