I write about the risk intersections of intelligence and security studies, economics, and the financial system
While sanctions have historically been effective during wartime, the results of sanctions used as a punitive measure during periods of peacetime have been inconclusive. One of the larger questions we should ask is: what is the effect of sanctions on the generation of civilians who grow-up under them? We must question if popular resentment from the economic effects of sanctions are more damaging in the long-run than any benefits gained.

The Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 (SAMLA) gives the UK autonomous powers to impose, implement, enforce and lift sanctions. Today the UK Government has published its first sanctions strategy. Deter, disrupt and demonstrate – UK sanctions in a contested world: UK sanctions strategy #sanctions #regime #UK
Today, the UK Government has published its first sanctions strategy. The UK has transformed its use of sanctions since acquiring autonomous sanctions powers under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018. This strategy addresses how we use sanctions as a foreign and security policy tool. It sets out the cross-government architecture we have built to deliver our sanctions, the partnerships we have developed with the private sector, NGOs, and international partners, and the steps we are taking to strengthen sanctions implementation and enforcement. The Solicitors Regulation Authority has released new guidance to help firms assess exposure to risks associated with the UK’s sanctions regime, including what a sanctions risk assessment should look like & tips for completing your assessment. #propertylaw #conveyancing #conveyancers #riskassessment #compliance
The sanctions regime has expanded rapidly since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Until recently, sanctions risk tended to apply only to a small number of specialist firms doing business with clients in affected jurisdictions. This is no longer the case and firms cannot afford to assume that sanctions do not pose a risk to them. Find out more in, including information on sanctions risk assessments, in our guidance https://bit.ly/49gfgA1
