Effective child protection requires more than just addressing immediate physical safety concerns. It necessitates a comprehensive approach that includes MHPSS to help children cope with trauma, build resilience, and thrive despite their circumstances. By integrating MHPSS into child protection strategies, we can ensure that children survive and develop to their full potential in a supportive environment. The shortage of mental health professionals remains a concern given the rise of issues such as adolescent suicide in the country. The Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA), Jesuit Refugee Service, Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI) and Three2Six call on all stakeholders – Governments, NGOs, communities, and individuals – to unite in strengthening both child protection and MHPSS frameworks. AND STILL COUNTING! Every precedent embalms a principle and in turn every custom begins as a broken precedent. The question therefore must be asked; what will become of a people who enact precedents that embalm, which is to say lead to the adoption of principles that are themselves in essence bereft of principle itself? The last year has seen every boundary transgressed and every transgression enabled. Elder, woman, child, infant, disabled, hospital, ambulance, university, school, childcare, place of worship, grave, farm, grocery store, journalist, humanitarian aid worker, refugee camp, orphanage; nothing is left sacrosanct and everything is justified, each and every time with no evidence and absolute impunity. With each new precedent set and each old precedent broken, our silence continues to set the standard. Only our arrogance blinds us from perceiving that we are only forming a yoke upon the world which wraps itself also around our own necks. …….. Once again I present to you the growing accolades of the, ‘world’s most moral army’, notwithstanding the other frontiers in which they are now engaged across the Levant.

People get caught everyday in the gaps between the best of systems due to the extraordinary challenges they face. It is life changing for them when someone is simply willing to be present beside them. Here are a few of those extraordinary challenges: 🚀Adolescence - when young people’s bodies & life situations turn upside down in the journey between childhood & adulthood. 🏙️Urbanization - when individuals or families leave behind their homes & families for the better opportunities available in the city & must rebuild their lives in what can seem like hostile new environments. 🧳Displacement- when individuals or families are forced to leave behind their homes & families to survive in a new place & must rebuild their lives in what can seem like hostile new environments. 🚢Immigration- when individuals or families leave behind their homes & families for the better opportunities available in a different country & must rebuild their lives in what can seem like hostile new environments. Young people are uniquely positioned to help in that they have the time & desire to help others facing these challenges by going into neighborhoods, slums, schools & refugee camps to build friendships with people in situations like these & to walk with them as they find their footing. We are looking for the solidarity organizations and persons who are open to cooperation and support of Sunflower Care e.V🌻 In March 2022, Sunflower Care e.V. and Cooperative Mensch e.V. created a joint project - a family-type hotel, which became a home for neurodivergent and disabled children and their caregivers. This project is very important, because due to it, children have the opportunity to be evacuated to a safe space, bypassing the refugee camps. It’s not a privilege, but a necessity due to physical or mental health that is incompatible with living in a crowded places. Sunflower Care coordinators and volunteers have the opportunity to organize therapeutic and musical classes for children living in this hotel. This is important because most children don’t attend kindergarten or school, because finding a place in the necessary school takes a long time. Unfortunately, the contract expires in December 2024. From September 2023, we are looking for new opportunities for the existence of such spaces. We welcome the government’s decision to extend the time period given to newly-recognised refugees for them to find somewhere new to live. The previous period of 28 days wasn’t enough time to process the paperwork needed for people to apply for housing, benefits, or work, and as a result was increasing levels of homelessness and poverty amongst this already vulnerable group. Causeway supports a number of modern slavery and human trafficking survivors who are living in asylum accommodation while their claim is processed, and for those who received a positive asylum claim, the short period in which to arrange new accommodation and employment, was proving stressful and leading to homelessness. We hope the new ‘move on’ time of 56 days will help avoid these problems, and the government will consider even more measures to provide safe and secure pathways to independence for all survivors. #Survivors #ModernSlavery #Refugees
