My first event was Brighton & Hove Pride in 2017 👣 Tell us about your career path. I've been involved with organising events for over 25 years, starting my career on the production side of the industry and fell into the crowd management world after being introduced to Select through mutual friends/event professionals. 💙 What do you love most about what you do? I love the variety of the events that we work on throughout the year, and our team is just wonderful! 🎟 What has been your favourite event to work during your time with Select? On 10/06/18, the streets of London, were transformed into vast rivers of green, white, and violet as 80,000 women and girls marched through the city to mark 100 years of the first British women voting. PROCESSIONS was a moment for celebration and reflection and a living portrait of what it means to be a woman today. 📚 If you could swap roles with anyone else on the team for a day, who would it be and why? I would swap with Peter Smith, as although we work closely with each other, our roles couldn’t be more different… plus I always feel that the more ‘on the ground’ knowledge/experience that someone can have working in Event Control, the better! 🧠 What's a skill or area of expertise you'd like to develop further in the coming year? I'm looking forward to completing my Level 5 in Crowd Safety Management early next year and grabbing any training opportunities that are offered. 📢 If you could give someone who is starting a career in crowd management a snippet of advice, what would it be? It can feel like decisions need to be made instantly when incidents are happening on the ground, but my advice is to take a moment to think, refer to the plan and trust your team.

Working in the agency world, we are constantly driven by a desire to learn, grow, and stay updated with the latest trends and innovations in our sector. It's essential for us to attend events, connect with industry experts, and engage in meaningful conversations to gain fresh perspectives that can benefit our clients and projects. However, it can be frustrating when certain events don't extend invitations to agencies - 'no agencies please' doesn't feel nice. We thrive on the opportunity to participate, contribute, and collaborate with fellow professionals. It's not just networking; it's about understanding the pulse of our industry, learning from others, and building connections that can drive positive change. I firmly believe that inclusivity fosters innovation. When agencies are welcomed into events, surely it helps to create a more diverse and vibrant atmosphere? We bring unique experiences, creativity, and a wealth of knowledge that shouldn't hinder any discussion. I have clients with challenges, I have challenges with clients myself. I'm not so dissimilar to others. There are some events that are brilliantly inclusive, but I'd like to encourage other event organisers and our industry peers to consider the value that agencies bring to the table. By allowing us to attend and engage, you not only empower us to excel but also enhance the collective growth of our sector. Perhaps I'm naive, but I'd like to feel like we're working together towards a common goal, whatever side we work on. UNPOPULAR OPINION The first time I stepped foot in the event industry was in 2009, I had followed a friend to support her dream and I ended up working as an usher. Oblivious to me that working as an usher will be my saving grace as an unemployed graduate in future. It's been 14 years since my first encounter with this industry and within these years, I have grown from working as an usher to linking hundreds of young women to various job opportunities in the event industry and currently running an event staffing business The Pro Event Hostess Hub and in my quest to build a sustainable and impactful business did my eyes open to how the Nigerian Event Industry is being sidelined from opportunities. One thing seems to pop out, in places where these opportunities are discussed, “The Nigerian Event Industry don't come top of mind” But the irony of it is that event personnel are engaged to plan and organize these events where key policies that shape different industries are discussed 😞. Out of my curiosity to understand why the above, I have asked various individuals within and outside the industry but no concrete reason. For those within the Nigerian event industry, they are oblivious of what they are missing out on and also don't even know how to use what they have and the level of impact they make in the society to attract opportunities. But for those outside, the Nigerian event industry doesn't come top of mind which I think is because of how it's been positioned in the industry ranking. Take a look at the picture attached below, the event industry is further grouped under travel and tourism. This would have sufficed in the past but currently the event industry has grown so much that I believe it should have its own category directly under hospitality.
