What a great day at the #Railtech Europe 24th Conference in Utrecht, The Netherlands. And Jeroen Brandse of ADSE Consulting and Engineering was there to update us with a live report! The rail sector faces various challenges. One of these is the introduction of new technologies on the train to ensure it is future-proof. Many organization I spoke to are wrestling how and when to retrofit ERTMS solutions in their rolling stock, taking into account minimal withdrawal and maximum commonality within their fleet. How to perform the right test trials to not only ensure technical feasibility but in particularly get a grip on operational reliability, availability and maintainability of the system. And how to fit in adjacent technology introductions like FRMCS and ATO/RTO. ADSE supports organisations in gaining control over the complexity of these major system upgrades through a practical, clear and supported working method. We analyse the impact on operations, determine the technical, procedural and organisational challengers, calculate the business case, control version and release management and verify the safety risks, determine the best possible strategy for implementation, regardless whether this occurs incremental, hybrid or through a big bang. 🔙 On 16th of November 2023, AERRL, ALLRAIL, CER, EAL, EIM, ERFA, UIP, UIRR and UNIFE had endorsed a common position paper to express their support to the implementation of the centralised registration function as the European Vehicle Register (EVR) defined in the Commission Implementing Regulation 2018/1614 of 25 October 2018. With this statement, they had outlined the need to guarantee the freedom to choose a national registration entity if preferred and shared reflections about coding of the countries in which the vehicles are registered and access rights. 📢In the context of this ongoing reform, AERRL, ALLRAIL (Alliance of Passenger Rail New Entrants), CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies), ERFA-European Rail Freight Association, UIC - International union of railways #UICrail#UICrail, International Union of Wagon Keepers (UIP), UIRR and UNIFE | The European Rail Supply Industry Association have defined a new common position about the use of the current European Vehicle Number and a vision of its evolution. They highlight the advantage of the existing EVN structure as a speaking number and they advocate keeping the authorisation (managed by manufacturers) and registration (managed by keepers) processes clearly separate. Due to a short-circuit on track 2 at Meitingen station (DE) last Thursday afternoon and the consequent damage caused by the fire to the overhead wire, an International Contingency Management (ICM) case according to RNE’s ICM Handbook has been declared on our Corridor. ⚠⚡ Since then, the Augsburg – Donauwörth line has been completely close in the Meitingen area. ⛔🛤 Rail freight traffic has been diverted mainly via Ingolstadt – leading to 30-60 minutes delays –, though some trains have also been rerouted via Ulm. We asked Senior Project Manager, Andrew Cardiff, to talk about the fitment of our First-in Class (FIC) loco, 66591, which we are collaborating with the Siemens Mobility team to fit, install and test European Train Control System (ETCS) equipment. Our pioneering partnership with Siemens Mobility to fit our FIC in-house with ETCS equipment will allow for the 'next generation' of digital signalling. Andy explains the intricacies of the retrofitment and the specific skills needed in order to be able to install and test this new and exciting equipment for the railway. 🛫 Understanding FRTO B0/1 🛫 Continuing from my last post, let's dive into the meaning of the FRTO B0/1 designator... 🧵 In short, it means Direct Routing (DCT). But let's break down each part of this designator: 1️⃣ 1 – Direct Routing is the first #ASBUElement in a matrix of #Threads and #Blokcs, meaning it's a specific change in operations designed to enhance the air navigation system. 🧱 B0 – Represents the #ASBUBlock where the #ASBUElement is located. ASBU Blocks are a period of a 6 years that defines a deadline for an element to be available for implementation, making all elements from Block 0 available to be implemented since 2013. 🧶 FRTO – This acronym identifies the #ASBUThread under which the Element exists. FRTO (Improved operations through enhanced en-route trajectories) is part of the Operational group in the ASBU framework. Threads highlight areas within the air navigation system that require improvement towards the global vision outlined in the Global ATM Operational Concept. 💡 What is #ASBU, then? 🤔 The Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU) methodology is a programmatic and flexible global approach that allows all Member States to advance their Air Navigation capacities based on their specific operational requirements.
