Over the years we’ve had the opportunity to support our friends at Car and Driver on a number of articles related to vehicle dynamics – from quantifying “best handling car” to comparing mid vs. rear-engine architecture. The latest article appears in the Jan/Feb 2025 issue and this time the subject is Ride. They gathered a wide range of vehicles, both in terms of segment and chassis technology, to subjectively evaluate. But they also wanted to dive deep into the objective measurement of ride and recognized how difficult quantifying ride comfort can be...so that’s where we came in. Who could turn down the opportunity to measure and evaluate everything from a Honda Accord to an F-150 Raptor R to a Rolls Royce Spectre back-to-back on the same surfaces?!?! While we are constantly experiencing different vehicles in the course of our work, it is usually in the context of a particular vehicle program and therefore, focused on a particular segment with a range of hardware capability (technology) appropriate for that segment. So, it was quite interesting to look across vehicle segments and different technologies – from tried-and-true passive suspension to the latest and greatest active and semi-active suspension systems. With the advantages of decoupling the suspension modes of the vehicle, a more practical approach of decoupling heave and roll as so where the heave spring/damper(shown below with the black coil spring) controls heave and pitch(when tied to a similar setup in the rear). The Roll spring/damper can control the roll and warp modes of the vehicle. These sorts of suspensions allow for more precise platform control especially in the case of high downforce vehicles where control of ride height may lead to a high heave stiffness requirement, but with the low weight of the vehicle allowing for a much less stiff roll spring. This design also keeps the number of spring/damper units the same at 4 per vehicle as compared to designs seen where the heave spring is connected to the roll bar requiring 3 spring/damper units, and a roll spring per axle of the vehicle. photo courtesy of Multimatic

Fellow professionals and inventive minds! Many are familiar with the well-known rack and pinion steering system in vehicles, celebrated for its simplicity and precise control. However, steering geometry—crucial in determining the wheel turn angle in response to driver torque input—often receives less attention. There are three primary types of steering geometry: parallel, Ackermann, and anti-Ackermann. Each type offers distinct advantages and drawbacks. Parallel geometry minimizes tire wear, Ackermann geometry excels in tight cornering at low speeds and enhances agility in off-road conditions, while anti-Ackermann geometry, commonly used in high-speed racing such as Formula 1, enables sharp maneuvering and drifting at elevated speeds. Typically, a vehicle can only be equipped with one type of steering geometry, preventing the simultaneous benefits of all three configurations. However, imagine a system that allows you to experience all three geometries in one vehicle, with manual adjustment capabilities. Its kind of, 'hit three mangoes with one stone.' Fascinating, isn't it? As a steering system engineer, I have conceptualized, designed, and implemented this innovative idea on our pre-Baja vehicle.
