They power us thousands of miles across the Atlantic, but how do jet engines actually work? The basic operation of a jet engine is relatively simple. The blades spin rapidly, compressing the air entering them. This compressed air is in turn sprayed with fuel and a spark is used to ignite the new mixture. As the gases burn, they expand and shoot at high speed through a nozzle at the back of the engine, thrusting the aircraft forward. In aviation, the angle of attack (AOA) is the angle at which the chord of an aircraft’s wing meets the relative wind. The chord is a straight line that runs from the wing’s leading edge to its trailing edge. The relative wind is the vector that represents the motion between the aircraft and the atmosphere. AOA can also be described as the difference between the direction the wing is pointing and the direction it’s going. AOA is important because it affects many aspects of aircraft performance, stability, and control. For example, AOA determines whether the aircraft’s aerodynamic surfaces are stalled. When the AOA increases, air will no longer flow smoothly over the wing, causing the airflow to separate from the wing’s surface and resulting in a stall. A high AOA can also cause turbulent airflow over the top of the wing, which can lead to a loss of lift.
