Exciting news from Electra! The Virginia-based company has successfully completed piloted test flights of its hybrid-electric short take-off and landing (eSTOL) demonstrator aircraft, the EL-2 Goldfinch. The test flights, conducted at Manassas Regional Airport and Warrenton-Fauquier Airport in Virginia throughout April and May, showcased impressive capabilities. During the testing, the aircraft, powered by eight electric motors to enhance lift, achieved remarkable feats. The longest flight lasted an impressive one hour and 43 minutes, demonstrating endurance and efficiency. With take-offs in under 170ft and landings in less than 114ft, the aircraft soared to an altitude of 6,500ft and cruised as slow as 25kt. These successful flights mark significant progress for Electra's innovative aircraft technology. In aviation, the aspect ratio of an aircraft's wing is the ratio of its span (the distance from tip to tip) to its average chord (the average width of the wing). It is a measure of the wing's shape and is used to describe how long and narrow, or short and wide, the wing is. A higher aspect ratio indicates a longer, narrower wing, which generally improves aerodynamic efficiency and reduces drag, making it more suitable for high-speed flight and gliding. Real-world demo of AFC-22 jet engine cooling unit by SAS - Scandinavian Airlines at OSL Gardermoen 🛫 On May 22, 2024, SAS - Scandinavian Airlines conducted a practical demonstration of the AFC-22 jet engine cooling unit at Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL). The trial compared the AFC-22 with traditional dry motoring to cool down jet engines post-flight. Demo details: ✈️ The aircraft landed at 20:57 and reached the gate at 21:01. Both engines were shut down at 21:02, each with an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) of 367°C. 👨✈️ Staff entered the cockpit at 21:14 to begin recording EGT. Cooling methods tested: 🔧 Left Engine: Cooled using the AFC-22 device 🔧 Right Engine: Cooled through dry motoring Key insights: ⏱️ The test started 15 minutes after engine shutdown, a necessity for dry motoring due to noise and safety. In contrast, the AFC-22 can begin cooling immediately, operating at just 78 dB. 🌡️ By 22:28, the left engine (AFC-22 cooled) reached 48°C, while the right engine (dry motoring) was at 88°C. 🌡️ The starter’s surface temperature during dry motoring hit 157°C, highlighting significant heat build-up. 🌡️ The AFC-22 maintained an airflow of 1.7-1.8 cubic meters/sec throughout the test. Advantages of AFC-22: 🔧 Requires no qualified technician, unlike dry motoring. 🔧 Efficient, quieter operation. 🔧 Immediate cooling capability.
