Theatre Communications Group upgraded me to a solo presentation at the national theater conference, and I love their description! "As nonprofit arts organizations we are fed the narrative that our most lucrative programs or productions are often the least mission-aligned, and vice versa: that our most mission-aligned work is the least beneficial for our bottom line. Out Of Hand Theater's story paints a different picture: we have developed a model that has tripled our income in four years while moving our neighbors to action on important issues and elevating the role of theater in our community. It’s a win for art, a win for business, and a win for our community... This session will illustrate more about this unique model, and generate further conversation about how to serve our bottom lines by centering our communities and harnessing our greatest potential for impact."

“Slow down, you move too fast”— a summer anthem. ⚫️Why do we grow programming before infrastructure? Or funding? ⚫️How come our big ideas are easier to come by than the culture required to ground it? ⚫️Why do we expand more naturally than we contract? (Boards too!) Spend some time journaling. Listen to music. Get your reflective groove on. Reflection. Intention. Strategy. Action. It’s a cycle. It’s a marathon. It’s not a sprint. Endurance matters. Slow down, you’re moving to fast. I took a whirlwind trip to NYC to see my daughter at the Manhattan School of Music and to attend the Williamstown Theatre Festival Gala. Between those two things, I had free time. Free. Time. Time. Walking without rushing, planning without considering, or even enjoying without thinking is counterintuitive. And yet, here I am being very not-industrious, and I believe I am doing something. I am honoring my parasympathetic nervous system, gently blocking out the central nervous system's instinct for incessant flight or fight responses. I am laughing at pigeons, cooing at dogs, and admiring the shapes, paces, and chemistry of the strangers moving around me. In this lower-stakes slice of time, I am recklessly allowing my joy to brim over. Ironically, on my way here, I was very emotional—part of the paradox of raising and loving kids is feeling whole while forever missing a part of you. Back to the idea of industriousness, allow yourself to deconstruct your idea of it, consider that idleness can be a good thing. It's neither feasible nor effective to constantly be on. My challenge to you: Make time to not do. Do this not doing for long enough that you stop thinking about what you would normally be doing. Continue until you feel something different bubble up. Stay strong. Seal it in. When you go back to what you always do, I guarantee there will be a shift. Second challenge: Pass it on.
