𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬' 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢-𝐊𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐲 I am deeply pained when I read about Angela Carini's defeat in her recent fight against Imane Khalif at the ongoing Paris Olympics. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢; 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬. When policies are applied without thought, they can cause real harm. The fight between Carini and Khalif, a biological male, is a prime example. It’s clear to me that this is an injustice to Carini, and it’s unfair to the other athletes who will face Khalif in future rounds. As someone who cares deeply about sports and the Olympic movement, I believe leadership needs to step up. We need policies that make sense and are fair. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞; 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬. Our leaders must engage with everyone involved—athletes, medical experts, and the community—to find solutions that work for everyone. Think about it. Is It Fair? Controversy in the Olympic Ring 🥊🏅 In a shocking turn of events at the 2024 Olympics, Italian boxer Angela Carini found herself up against a biological male boxer Imane Khelif, who identifies as female. The match ended quickly, with Carini being knocked out in just 46 seconds, abandoning her bout after enduring hard hits. This controversial bout raises critical questions about fairness in competitive sports. While I strongly support inclusivity in all areas of life, I can't help but question whether this situation was fair to all athletes involved. Promoting equality is crucial, but where should we draw the line to ensure fair competition? This isn’t the first time such a scenario has sparked debate. Previous instances, like the case of Laurel Hubbard in weightlifting, and Lia Thomas in swimming, have also raised questions about how to balance inclusivity with fair competition. 🌟 Inclusivity is vital in ensuring everyone has the opportunity to compete and thrive in sports. But when fairness is in question, where do we draw the line? 🤔 📈 What’s the Solution? While it’s essential to support inclusivity, it’s equally crucial to ensure fair competition. Day 6. Australia still leads the Women's Medal Tally! All EIGHT golds have been won by women, with the latest coming from the 4 x 200m freestyle team. We're calculating the tally according to medals won by women at the Paris Olympics. A reminder: You can catch the standard medal take pretty much anywhere! Australia is fourth on that list, with China leading (unless you're looking at certain American media counting the tally according to TOTAL medals won, and putting USA on top). Context is key when it comes to nutrition for sport. It’s really key in endurance sport and sometimes this is where the mismatches arise. Education is really key to explain the context.

🎉 Brilliant to see The Research Handbook on Gender and Diversity in Sport Management published. What a line up! 🤩 Congrats to Annelies Knoppers and Pirkko Markula for bringing this together. 📖 In our chapter, Jordan Matthews and I discuss how and why Paralympic sport organisations are less proactive in implementing strategies to increase the representation of women in their leadership and governance structures compared to their Olympic counterparts. This is despite poor female representation across Paralympic governance: - 22% women on boards - 6% of chairs or presidents are women - 23% of secretary generals (or equivalent) are women 📝 Our discussion is focused around two key factors: 1) Differences in top-down gender and governance policy within the Paralympic and Olympic Movements. 2) Intersections between ableism and patriarchy within the governance of the Paralympic Movement. Meanwhile, the United States holds the top spot among countries, contributing 18% to the global picture. South and Central America are also emerging as key players. 🔥 When we examine data per capita, hotspots such as Sweden, New Zealand, Finland, Australia, and Denmark emerge, closely mirroring male participation trends. 📈 Recent years show a shift in the geographic landscape. While Europe and the US continue to dominate, East Asia and Oceania are also beginning to grow numbers in female participation. This data highlights both progress and challenges in the motorsport industry, providing key questions that the sport should reflect on: ❶ What barriers are preventing more women from joining the race? ❷ How can we encourage and support greater female participation?
