𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Last week, I had the pleasure of attending @S+B’s conference on Sustainable Lab Design. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with professionals from across the sector and gain insights from end users, designers, and suppliers alike. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲: - 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: The latest modular service infrastructure technology is transforming how adaptable spaces are designed, even in sensitive and service-intensive areas. This adaptability is crucial for future-proofing our buildings and ensuring their longevity. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: The conference highlighted the intricate relationship between safety and sustainability in lab environments. It raises the question —should we be integrating sustainability advisors into our project teams across construction project lifecycles, just as we do with safety advisors? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: Supporting clients on their sustainability journeys underscored the importance of data. From benchmarking carbon in projects to ensuring data transparency in space usage, effective design development hinges on both quantitative and anecdotal data. This is a significant challenge in our industry, emphasizing the need for enhanced carbon data knowledge among professionals. Research I was part of through my role with Innovation North at the Ivey Business School at Western University is now published! In partnership with CSA Group, we engaged with key stakeholders in the built environment sector to identify how we might move from a take-make-waste economy towards a circular economy. We identified that the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, the adaptive design of new buildings, and the reuse of materials are key elements of a circular built environment. A systems approach is necessary for accelerating this transition given the complexity of the sector and the number of actors involved.

Solutions to mitigate the buildings "embodied" carbon emissions – originating from the design, production, and deployment of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum – have lagged – this is the fact! We need mechanisms to drive forward the delivery of new strategic infrastructure along with the maintenance, modernization and renewal of existing assets. We must achieve this while contributing to national reduction goals in carbon emissions. To effectively address this challenge, we must bring together all stakeholders from across the entire lifecycle of the buildings sector, both within informal and formal settings.
