How often do your team members smile and laugh? I just returned from a multi-state family vacation. I observed staff at multiple attractions, lodging areas, restaurants, etc. Some teams seemed happy. Others, not so much. The first group treated us like guests; the latter more as a task or number. From those little interactions, I could confidently guess which companies have good cultures. Your senior living customers are monitoring this, too. And the stakes are much higher than deciding whether to return to a restaurant or destination. They are observing what their LIFE will be like if they choose your community. What are your team’s actions telling them about your culture? This holiday season, I embarked on a unique journey with my team. Instead of the usual festive rituals, I decided to personalize it - by gifting each of my 21 team members a T-shirt that resonates with them. It could be a nod to their role or a light-hearted memory shared over the year. The process was not just about choosing shirts; it was about reflecting on each individual's contribution and personality. However, life often has its plans. The shirts, meticulously selected and sent, didn't arrive in time for the holidays. But this minor setback turned into a delightful experience. My team spread across Canada from Nova Scotia to Vancouver Island, started receiving their shirts and cards this week. The joy was palpable in their posts, showcasing their unique shirts. This experience reaffirmed a belief I hold dear: fun and work are not mutually exclusive. We spend a significant part of our lives at work; why not make it a source of joy? The highlight of this journey came through a message from a team member who had just received their T-shirt and card: "I don't know what the future holds. But if I ever ascend to a position like yours, I am grateful for all the lessons and examples you have given me of what being a great leader is." This message was more than just words; it was a testament to the impact of leadership grounded in empathy and connection. Such moments are a powerful reminder and validation for any leader. They signify that amidst the myriad responsibilities, you are making a positive difference in someone's life. I am grateful for the opportunity to be the leader I always wished to have. Each day with my team is a chance to grow, learn, and create an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired. The Heart of Hospitality Past week, I was going down memory lane. I remember, in one of my hotels in Arizona, there was a moment that perfectly showed what true leadership is all about. It wasn't just about what one person did, but about making a space where everyone could do their best. I always #believed in my team's potential. At every meeting, I made sure everyone could share their ideas on how to make our guests' stays better. Trusting their suggestions led to new services that guests really enjoyed. One holiday season was especially busy. The hotel was fully booked, and the staff felt really stressed. Instead of telling everyone what to do, I #empowered them and gave them the freedom to make their own decisions and the tools they needed. This made them feel more confident. To show my #appreciation, I organized a special dinner for the whole team. I thanked each person personally for their hard work and dedication. This made everyone feel valued and part of something special. Because of that, the team worked together with renewed energy, providing excellent service. A clerk at a Philadelphia hotel went above and above his duty by politely accommodating a guest on a rainy and cold night, providing his room to William Waldorf Astoria despite the fact that the entire hotel was filled. This gesture of goodwill wasn't overlooked. William Waldorf was struck by the clerk's professionalism and empathy, and after a few years, he offered him an exceptional opportunity to work in New York City. This tale touches me deeply because it emphasizes the need of leading with humanity. Here are several crucial takeaways. 1. Empathy and kindness are important: Small acts of kindness can have far-reaching consequences. Showing genuine concern and empathy for others not only improves their experience, but also fosters strong, meaningful relationships. 2.
