💡Resource efficiency lowers #material and #energy #consumption, reducing environmental and climate impact: Within the scope of Industrial Collective Research #igf, FVV and its projects help companies make their production more efficient in terms of #resources and costs, increase the performance and longevity of #components, thereby retaining materials in the circular economy for longer. On our website you can read more on this subject: https://lnkd.in/eRhcDfdP The fact sheets of two IGF projects show how important research into material properties is for driving forward the energy transition and intelligent mobility concepts: ❓The components of modern powertrain and energy conversion systems that carry exhaust gas are exposed to high mechanical and thermal loads during operation. This can cause the components to crack, thereby reducing their service life. ❗Researchers at TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing / Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin have developed the ProCrackPlast software that simulates and predicts the path of a fatigue crack. ❓Novel metal-graphite composites enable higher service temperatures and thus the more efficient operation of machines, motors and engines. ❗Researchers from the Institute for Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology / Institut für Leichtbau und Kunststofftechnik (ILK), TU Dresden and Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials / Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen devised a process control and design strategy for the general methodical development of these materials. #science #research #innovation #efficiency #circularity #crack #fatigue #composites #metalgraphite #plainbearings #mechanicalseals #transfer #wearetransfer

Vetropack’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Guido Stebner, has assumed the role of Chairman of the International Partners in Glass Research (IPGR) e.V. group. Dr. Stebner succeeds Vetropack Group CEO Johann Reiter in the IPGR role. The research organisation is dedicated to enhancing the competitiveness of glass in the packaging industry through research and development programmes and individual collaboration among its members. To achieve this goal, it promotes exchange and cooperation between the industry, universities, and public authorities. Dr Stebner said: "As an international #research organisation, we consolidate the pre-competitive research and development activities of our members, addressing the pressing issues facing our industry, such as reducing #co2 emissions in the manufacture of our products. "To this end, we work closely with academic institutions such as RWTH Aachen University or the Montanuniversität in Leoben, as well as public authorities such as the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action and other globally active glass manufacturers." The proximity to the research organisation's production plants is advantageous when implementing results on a larger scale that were obtained in the laboratory or during computer modelling. For instance, at the end of their service life, the #glass melting furnaces at the Vetropack plant in Trezzano sul Naviglio, #Italy were used in a test programme known as the No Soda Trial. During the ten-day large-scale industrial trial, the raw material mix was modified so it was no longer necessary to add sodium carbonate, which is one of the main sources of CO2 emissions. The researchers investigated the melting behaviour of the mixture and demonstrated the formability of bottles made from the soda-free melt. At Vetropack's Innovation Centre in Pöchlarn, Austria, an industrial system for coating moulds has been established. The aim of the Dry Glass Forming project is to prevent the glass from sticking to the mould surface by selecting suitable coatings, thereby eliminating the need for manual or automated lubrication of the moulds. This approach would save mineral oil-based lubricants, offering advantages from both an ecological and an economic standpoint. The first coated moulds have already been used in the plants of IPGR members – with promising results. Dr. Guido Stebner has been Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vetropack Group for Engineering and Production since January 1st, 2021. He graduated from Technische Universität Clausthal University of Technology in 1991 with a degree in #metallurgy and received his doctorate from RWTH Aachen University in 1997. Founded in 1984, the IPGR has been based in Aachen since 2016.

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 - 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐲 Every industrial production process is based on two pillars: raw materials and energy. The aim is to make processes as efficient and loss-free as possible. With modern environmental strategies, companies are endeavoring to make these manufacturing processes environmentally friendly and sustainable. #3D-printing technology is one of these methods. It can be used to produce very complex components in particular, which would often be impossible using conventional manufacturing processes. The CLASCO project is dedicated to precisely this manufacturing process, with the aim of structuring the surfaces of the components in a specific way and thus enabling new application possibilities in high-tech areas. Process monitoring will be an essential component of the future system. On the one hand, this will monitor the process and, on the other, provide efficient data for AI-based process control. Together with an infrared camera, our #processobserver will fulfil this task. You can watch the first results of the interaction between these different technologies at any time in the CALSCO webinar series on YouTube: https://hubs.li/Q02J_ydj0 We are delighted to be part of this great consortium and look forward to further teamwork. nLIGHT plasmo European Commission Innovate UK #manufacturing #innovation #DigitalTransformation
