Please welcome Nurdana Orynbek, a new PhD student at the IBD group. "I received my Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences with a major in Chemistry and Biology from Université de Strasbourg, France. I have then completed my Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree in Biological and Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Bioeconomy at the universities of Reims Champagne-Ardennes, AgroParisTech (France), and Liège (Belgium), where I worked on a research project on the biotechnological production of aroma compounds for foods and cosmetics using agro-industrial residues. My Master's thesis was done at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) of Vienna, focusing on the microbial strategies for acetate production from industrial by-products with a potential for CO2 fixation. Currently, I joined the IBD group and TU Wien for a PhD project in microbial oil production, and I am eager to continue working in this direction in future! Dr. Leonie van 't Hag and myself are looking for potential PhD candidates to work on the project: Using starchy/cellulosic agricultural waste in packaging materials: Modeling metabolic flux regulation during bacterial fermentation via population balances coupled with cybernetic models This will be a fully-funded position under Monash Malaysia's Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS). The candidate will spend 33 months in Monash University Malaysia and up to 9 months in Monash University in Australia. Their properties and compositions depend on side-group structure which can be tailored by manipulating bacterial metabolism through appropriate feedstock selection. Understanding the interaction between a complex feedstock environment and metabolic diversity is crucial. This sophisticated interplay of events, where microbes respond to polymeric environmental changes by regulating intracellular metabolic fluxes, can be modelled using population balances coupled with cybernetic models. The first doctoral course in the history of polytechnic education approved! The first doctoral course in the history of Polytechnic education was approved by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3Es), following the practical application of the decree approved in the Assembly of the Republic, in April 2023, which allows Polytechnics to grant the degree degree and change the terminology from polytechnic institutes to polytechnic universities. The Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB) sees the approval of the first doctoral course in polytechnic education in Portugal. Called “Intelligent Systems Engineering”, this course was accredited for a period of six years, without any restrictions, starting in September with 15 places. The IPB is also awaiting the approval of two more doctoral courses, one in Biosystems Engineering and the other in Technology and Natural-Based Products. The admirable work of excellence carried out by the teaching staff, researchers over several years, resulted in this achievement! 2ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MYCOREMEDIATION & MYCOTREATMENT The 2nd International Workshop on Mycoremediation and Mycotreatment (MYCOREM 2024) will take place at Sherbrooke (Qc, Canada), October 22nd-24th, 2024. MYCOREM 2024 will be hosted by the Université de Sherbrooke. The workshop will emphasize on the utilization and valorization of fungi, and their related enzymes, for bioremediation purposes as well as for other industrial applications. The latter will provide a unique opportunity to present achievements and innovations in fundamental sciences and engineering, and stimulate the exchange of information between academics, industrials, consultants, and governments. The conference format is designed to be highly interactive to stimulate discussions, interdisciplinary interactions, and meetings alongside the scientific sessions. In addition, a 1-day training course will be offered, covering fundamental and applied aspects of mycoremediation and some mycotreatments. Both Oral and Poster presentations along with My thesis in 3-minute presentations are solicited across the proposed conference themes. The organizing committee also encourages the submission of high-quality abstracts on themes that are not listed but are based on innovative studies and/or commercial applications that are related to mycoremediation. AMBER the SFI Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research has launched a Position Paper entitled 'The Importance of Materials Science to Ireland'. Co-authored by AMBER Director Professor Mick Morris, AMBER Executive Director Dr Lorraine Byrne and Economist Jim Power and available in full at the link below. AMBER Director Professor Mick Morris introduced the Position Paper at the launch held in the PACCAR Theatre, Naughton Institute, Trinity College Dublin on Tuesday 23rd April 2024. Attendees ranged from representatives from the business community, research sector, FDI, policy makers, Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and various Government Departments including Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Anton Savage moderated a panel discussion with paper authors Dr Lorraine Byrne and Jim Power, and included Mary Harney Chairperson of AMBER, Prof. Fergal O'Brien’Brien Deputy Director of AMBER, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Professor and Paper Contributor and Claire McGee Head of Education and Innovation Policy, Ibec. Recommendations: AMBER is calling for the development of a national strategy for advanced materials which aligns with national priorities and European initiatives which will consider the following recommendations: The creation of a national stakeholder group across academia, industry and Government to inform policy and funding for materials science and ensure Ireland remains a world leader in this field. Dedicated, sustained and predictable research funding for materials science. A strong national research centre should be supported as a national priority. Focussing dedicated funding at priority areas within the broader materials science field. Renewal of the national infrastructure supporting materials science research and innovation. Significant funding is required if this is to be consistent with other world-class centres. Development of a materials training strategy, funded from the National Training fund. This should span diploma, MSc, and PhD schemes in addition to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training to upskill the existing workforce. #materialscience #advancedmaterials

Latest round of National Industry PhD Program!   At Harrison SPARC Pty Ltd, we know that collaborations drive innovation and develop creative solutions to the world’s BHAGs (big hairy audacious goals). And today’s announcement is another step in fostering partnerships to tackle those issues.   Our project application with researchers from UNSW (Dr Rita Henderson, Dr Naras Rao and Dr Peter Wich) was successful in the latest round of the National Industry PhD Program (NIPP). This project looks to replace synthetic polymers in the water treatment sector with novel, bio-based flocculant systems to make a greener, more sustainable system.
