President CEO at Canal Corridor Association

#HappyBirthday to the National Park Service and to the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Area. 🎂 Our birthday was yesterday (Aug 24). It's the day in 1984 that Ronald Reagan signed the bill that created our National Heritage Area–America's First–as a "new kind of national park" that combined preservation, conservation, recreation and economic development within an area where people lived, worked and created history. The National Park Service was established on August 25, 1916 to "preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations." Of course, the closeness of our birthdays was by design. The Reagan administration wanted to sign the bill in conjunction with celebrating the NPS' birthday. Our two organizations, the Canal Corridor Association and the NPS, remain close to this day in more than just our birthdays. Today, we are part of a National Heritage Area System within the National Park Service that uses a public-private partnership model in which local non-government coordinating entities collaborate with government agencies. It's been a fruitful partnership, and we look forward to many more years working and celebrating our birthdays together. #iandmcanal #iandmcanal175th #nonprofit #nonprofitleadership #illinois #community #nonprofitorganization  #storytelling #strategicplanning #nationalheritagearea #nationalparkservice #nationalparks #governmentagency
