But, should we map out the bathrooms? 🤷♀️ We've got a fascinating and entertaining new event planned on Sat, June 29. It's our Day in the Country Farm, Barn & Ag Tour, which offers a chance to explore behind-the-scenes at working farms and get up close and personal with cattle, chicks, the crops that are grown and even alpacas. There's a lot to do in order to prepare, including pulling together the insurance, making signs for the stops and developing a map for people to follow from location to location. We're working with a great mapmaker and illustrator, Tom Willcockson (highly recommend), and one of the questions that came up internally was "should we point out where people can find bathrooms along the route?" 🧻 Seriously, in running a nonprofit, or really any business, the details and decisions never end, do they? We have this beautiful map. Are we going to mark it up with bathroom symbols? We decided not to. Everyone has to start at one of two stops to pick up their wristbands for the tour. Both of those locations have bathrooms as do several stops along the tour, so we'll give them a heads up when we hand off their wristbands and the map. Should be fine... Right? 🤞 What burgeoning on the absurd or minute details decisions have you had to make lately? By the way, if you're interested in learning more about our tour, joining us or even becoming a sponsor, get more details here: https://lnkd.in/ggU_eU7A #iandmcanal #nonprofit #illinois #community #MidwestHistory #CelebratingHeritage #IllinoisHistory #NationalHeritageArea #HistoricIllinois #CommunityEvent #CulturalHeritage #LocalLegacy #agriculture #agritourism #agtour #barntour #farmtour

To my Iowa connections: Two bills have been introduced in the Iowa legislature that would have drastic implications on our ability to enjoy parks, trails and wildlife areas in our State. SSB 3129 and its companion bill, HF 2104, would prohibit the Iowa DNR from acquiring land "available for sale at an auction" or "by donation or purchase from a nonprofit corporation that acquired the real property in a competitive manner, including but not limited to at an auction.” The broad language in this bill would set an incredibly dangerous precedent that could severely inhibit the DNR and other non-profits from providing Iowans with areas to recreate in the outdoors. If you enjoy Iowa's trails, parks, and public hunting and fishing areas, you should be incredibly concerned with these bills. Subcommittee meetings are today at 9:30am CT (Senate) and tomorrow at 1:30pm CT (House). If you would like to see continued access to our natural resources and outdoors spaces, please write to each subcommittee and let them know you oppose SSB 3129 and HF 2104. For more info on how to do so, you can follow the below link from INHF. https://lnkd.in/gchVik3Y

Building connections with neighbors contributes to a sense of community and can enhance your overall living experience. My little children remained at the window. I was still trying to decide what to do with them. The situation was the same. One of the plants was growing while the other looked almost dead. Someone recommended me to ask my neighbor, a skilled and successful gardener, for advise and help. He has a beautiful and magnificent green house in his backyard where plants of many shapes and colors are growing and having a healthy and productive life. When I asked him for help he said: - Were the seeds part of a present?- he did not wait for an answer- those are bad seeds- he said- I use only selected seeds who are a guarantee for growing. Your possibilities are really limited if you use seeds of such bad quality- he said. He explained to me that he has a program for selection and the seeds need to pass a series of tests before they can be used to grow in the greenhouse. He recommended me to dispense the child who stop the growing process. He explain that sometimes, some bad seeds are selected erroneously, and they can work at the beginning, but later they disrupt the environment because their sickness and lack of energy. -I have a reputation to maintain and I do not have time for accommodations or additional support. If you want to be a successful gardener, then, you need to have the best. I recommend you to eliminate those plants, improve your selection process, and promote your program as open but selective, popular but elitist, and resourceful but very expensive- he said. Later, he sent me a request for a monetary donation. -It is for research purposes- he stated at the end.

Another push for companies to join in on the fun of the 3rd annual Public Lands and Waters Yard Sale to benefit Backcountry Hunters & Anglers This year's sale is coming October 22nd-November 4th and we already have commitments from 25 top companies across hunting, fishing and outdoors landscape. What's in it if your company joins? 1. You're providing critical fuel for a funding source that helps BHA fulfill it's mission of being the voice for North America's wild public lands, waters and wildlife. Funds raised will go directly to things like large scale habitat improvements and cleanups, advocating to keep public lands...public, helping battle the corner crossing issue, organizing volunteers to show up for what they believe in like defending the North American Model of Conservation and SO MUCH MORE. 2. Clear out unwanted inventory. Blow the dust off those boxes in your warehouse, your overstocks, packaging changes, slight blems...we can take those items and open up your storage space. 3. Tax Deduction-everything you donate becomes a tax donation because we're a 501C3 non profit! Dont send your inventory to a discounter, send it to us and take the full scale deduction. 4. Advertising for your brand. BHA members and supporters are wildly loyal to the brands that support us. Pre-promotion and the subsequent sale is going to have thousands of eyeballs on it. Couple all that with features to our email list, social media channels, the podcast and other avenues....it's a win for your brand. Also, did I mention that 76% of our members are below 55 years old? It's a highly desirable demo for sure! 5. My undying love and support. That's got to be worth something. Please let me know if there are any questions and thank you for considering!

To wrap up #EarthMonth, this weekend I graduated from Forest ReLeaf of Missouri's Tree Stewardship program, which included 12 hours of classroom instruction and 15 hours of volunteer work. Over the past month, I participated in some local volunteer activities, including: 🌳 Planting trees along the Great Rivers Greenway 🌱 Potting tree seedlings at the Forest ReLeaf nursery 🌷 Pulling tulips at the Missouri Botanical Garden 🚮 Picking up trash and removing invasive species with Open Space STL 🧤 Mulching and pruning park trees with STL Neighborhood Foresters The most important thing I learned during this program ... There are some amazing organizations in St. Louis making our city a greener, healthier and more beautiful place to live. If you're like me and at times feel overwhelmed by the immense amount of work needed to safeguard our environment, go out and give a few hours of your time at one of these (or similar) organizations. You'll feel better knowing that you made a lasting and positive impact on your community. That, and say no to mulch volcanoes 😉 (Seriously though, they're awful for trees.) If you're in the St. Louis region, please check out these incredible organizations. #volunteer #arborday #earthday #stlouis #sustainability #community #conservation

The feedback from my fall experiment of offering free habitat workshops was so positive I’ve decided to host seasonal habitat workshops this year to share actionable ways to create a more ecologically sustainably landscape - with the focus on the function of our yards as a wildlife habitat. The size of the workshops is intentionally limited to make them more interactive and encourage authentic connections. I’ve worked hard to offer hands-on and practical ideas geared towards anyone who is at the beginning of the process of restoring habitat where they live. I’m maintaining the low-key nature of the workshops by reaching out through my networks to folks who are open to making their yards more wildlife friendly. Feel free to share this information with anyone who you think "gets it" and might benefit. The Winter Habitat Yard Workshop is on Sunday, February 25 from 12:00-2:00pm. Before reserving a spot by e-mailing ljmarkson@att.net, please read the blog post here (https://lnkd.in/dbps6NzX) plus the one I wrote last fall (https://lnkd.in/g3H9z_ij) detailing the reasons for the workshop and what to expect. Spring and summer dates are in the works! The workshops are for adults, but children of all ages are welcome – after all it’s their future we’re all trying to save! Be on the lookout for a special family workshop this summer. * I'm keeping the workshops free. My website is being updated and will have a donate button now that Nurture Native Nature is a non-profit organization. This will help offset the cost of offering free educational community outreach programs and activities throughout the year. #nativeplants #naturelovers #habitatyard #coexistwithnature #nurturenativenature

Never feed wildlife. Feeding coyotes intentionally or unintentionally is the cause behind many incidents of coyotes approaching or biting people. Just like domestic dogs, food can be a great motivator for uneasy wildlife – and by providing food (directly or indirectly by feeding or attracting other animals) we teach coyotes to expect food from people. By ensuring coyotes do not expect food rewards from anyone, we reduce the chances they’ll approach or get closer to people. 2 Keep dogs on leash. In a multi-year study, 92.3% of dogs who had encounters with coyotes were off-leash. Particularly when coyotes and other wildlife are active – dusk to dawn – keeping dogs on leash not only prevents potential issues with wildlife (who may view dogs as a threat) but can prevent and reduce traffic collisions, negative encounters with people or other dogs, and is frequently required by law. 3 Know the neighbours. If you’re aware of which species are in your community, you can be properly prepared to encounter them and know how to appropriately react. For example, if you’re aware coyotes live in the area and one monitors or follows you through a forest, you may know that this is a common behaviour that isn’t a threat or danger – it’s curiosity and worry for family. 4 Manage attractants and talk to your neighbours about them. Whether it’s a bird feeder, outdoor pet food, or an overflowing compost bin, identifying and managing attractants when wildlife are present can reduce negative encounters. Click here to learn more about managing attractants and what to look for around your home or business. 5 Removal of wildlife is not a solution. The idea of taking a coyote from an urban area and dropping them in a remote wilderness may seem logical, but it’s a highly traumatizing event that can lead to greater issues by breaking up family units, creating conflict within territories, and potentially spreading disease. Wildlife are in our communities because, even though they’re urban or suburban, they’re still part of ecosystems. Learning to coexist – and thrive – with wildlife around us makes for a healthier community and planet. Learn more about the One Health approach by clicking here. As more people are exploring our website and making profiles to start volunteering in the community, we'd like to continue the Intro to Volunteer Peterborough 105. We have a lot of volunteer opportunities on the site, and we know that very few of you have the time to browse through every single one to assess if it's something you can or want to do. That's why we have these wonderful filters. If you have an account, the filters automatically recommend the best possible matches for you, although you are free to check out what else is available. "Skills Requested" is self explanatory. You can scroll through the list and tick every sill you bring to the table. Cleaning, Animal Care, and Handling Money, for example. These preferred skills may match you up with a one-shot "Clean Jackson Creek" or a weekly "help look after the Squirrels at Squirrel Haven Rescue." And there's no rules stating you can't sign up for both! "Causes Benefitted" further narrows the options. If your passion is the environment, it will pull out all the agencies that are endeavouring to save the planet. Combining the Causes and Skills will get very specific results! Again, it's our goal to make selecting opportunities as quick and painless as setting up a playlist. By stating your preferences up front, we make recommendations that match those preferences. Because your time is valuable. We want you to make the most of it. Peruse what's available today! https://buff.ly/3rsamzk Remember: It's ALWAYS FREE for Volunteers! #VolunteerRecruitment #VolunteerHours #CommunityBuilding #Tutorial
