Homicide rates have risen and fallen since the beginning of the pandemic. While 2023 homicide trends are forecasted to decrease, a national conversation about firearms homicides and the current projection is required. ICJIA’s research shows that during the pandemic, homicide rates increased in affluent and marginalized communities. And, like COVID-19, the loss was more significant in vulnerable communities with considerable demographic and socioeconomic disparities. Our data affirms that, in Illinois, racial disparities are a contributing factor in firearm homicides. Just how disproportionately are racial and ethnic minorities impacted by the criminal justice system? Let’s start with looking at a visualization of official data, cold hard numbers, where this reverberating impact starts: arrests. Below, you’ll see the proportion of arrests in each US state grouped by race and ethnicity, compared to the proportion of each in the population of each state. (I made the points larger for mobile viewing, but every listed race/ethnicity for every state is included) Note: Contrary to popular belief, people arrested ARE innocent, until, and all to often despite, being “proven” guilty. I created this in RStudio, based on data released in July, this year. Data was obtained through ICPSR, from a report of the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, for the year 2021, and of course census data (tidycensus). Detailed citations are in the caption. I’m looking for sources of data related to sentencing outcomes with racial information, as well as parole granting vs denial with timeframes and racial information. If anyone has any leads for data like this, please let me know.

My team at National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) just released the latest national estimates of #bullying in U.S. public and private #schools from the 2022 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey. Some key stats: Roughly 1 in 5 students in 6th-12th grade report being bullied and the prevalence of cyber-bullying is about twice as high among girls as it is among boys. The Police Department Research Analysis project investigates various aspects of law enforcement activities through a comprehensive examination of police stop data. The project aims to uncover insights into factors like gender, age, race, and time of day to inform policy decisions and enhance policing practices. Key research questions addressed in the project include: 1. Gender Disparities in Speeding Violations: Analyzing whether men or women are stopped more frequently for speeding violations. 2. Gender's Impact on Police Searches: Investigating if gender influences who gets searched during police stops. 3. Mean Duration of Police Stops: Determining the average duration of police stops to understand the time spent during law enforcement interactions. 4. Age Distribution Across Violations: Exploring how the age distribution varies across different types of violations. 5. Demographic Distribution of Police Stops by Race: Examining the racial demographics of individuals stopped by police. 6. Variations in Police Stops by Day and Month: Analyzing how the number of police stops varies by day of the week and month. 7. Distribution of Police Stops by Time of Day: Investigating the distribution of police stops across different times of the day. The project utilizes a dataset containing detailed information about vehicle stops, including date, time, driver demographics, violation details, search conduct, and stop outcomes. Through data cleaning and transformation, the dataset is prepared for analysis by addressing missing values and restructuring data. Insights from the analysis reveal significant findings: - Disparities in Police Searches by Gender: Men are subjected to searches at a notably higher rate compared to women. - Average Duration of Police Stops: On average, police stops last approximately 11.9 minutes. - Variation in Age Distribution Across Violations: Different types of violations exhibit varying age distributions among drivers. - Racial Demographics of Police Stops: White individuals are most frequently stopped by police, followed by Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Other racial groups. - Temporal Patterns in Police Stops: The busiest time for police stops is during the morning hours, followed by the afternoon, with relatively lower activity during evenings and early mornings. The project concludes with recommendations aimed at enhancing policing practices, including diversifying training programs, improving data collection and reporting, fostering community engagement, implementing accountability measures, and investing in technology and data analytics. These recommendations aim to promote fairness, transparency, and community-centered policing to ensure safer and more inclusive communities for all individuals.

Homicides are plummeting in American cities. Homicides have fallen around 20% in 133 cities from the beginning of the year through the end of March compared with the same period in 2023, according to crime-data analyst Jeff Asher, who tabulated statistics from police departments across the country. The drop—which is the sharpest in decades—is an acceleration of a trend that began last year, following a homicide spike during the pandemic. Still, police officials and researchers cautioned that crime trends aren’t always consistent and future homicide rates are difficult to predict.
