RESUME TIPS FOR ANALYTIC TALENT: I am a veteran recruiter in the analytic space and I get over 500 resumes a day. True confession: I click delete if all I see are keywords and no mention of the business or how your analytic work impacts the business. My clients simply don't want to see resumes of generic talent. Here are tips on how to stand out. LET ME HELP YOU!
1) YOU MUST GIVE QUANTIFIABLE ACHIEVEMENTS - show you understand the business you have worked in and how your analytics or data impacted the bottom line. Businesses like to hire people who understand and speak in business terms. i.e. Increased XYZ (revenue, website visits, customer base etc) 15% YOY.
2) STATE BUSINESS PROBLEM(S) AND TECHNIQUES AND TOOLS USED TO ANSWER THE PROBLEM - in your bullets, state the business problem you were helping answer through your analytics and THEN tell the techniques and tools you used to answer the business problem. That is how you will get the important keywords in your resume. i.e. Built an existing risk model using deep neural nets by replacing FICO 08 with a stronger pooled risk score to complement our current risk model to strengthen credit card acquisition risk metrics.
3) DO NOT BE INDUSTRY / OR BUSINESS PROBLEM AGNOSTIC - there are 10,000,000 "data analysts" (simplifying for the sake of this tip list) out there. My clients want to hire someone who has worked on the type of business problems they face. Your resume will likely be deleted if you don't mention an industry or business problem once you are beyond entry level. Make sure you stand out by specifying what area you work in. It will drastically help!
4) HAVE AN OBJECTIVE - I hate resumes that don't tell me what you want to do. Show me you know what you want to do so your resume stands out in my mind. It can be as simple as "I am a XYZ expert and am seeking to use my XYZ skills to help a business achieve their objectives. If you are entry level, say "I am a recent graduate with an XYZ degree and I would like to use my technical skill set to help a business achieve their goals."
