AI engineers are the new rockstars of the tech world, but becoming one requires a unique blend of skills. Here’s what I think you need to stand out in this field: 1. Solid Software Engineering Skills.  - Real-world experience with large-scale applications. - Python or Typescript proficiency  - Frameworks like FastAPI, NestJs (or Spring Boot 🤷) 2. Knowledge of Modern Architectures - Get comfortable with queues and message buses (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ), serverless architectures (e.g., AWS Lambda), containers (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes) and databases (e.g. Postgres, Qdrant). - Integration experience is a big plus. - Understand infrastructure and DevOps best practices. 3. Curiosity for Language Models - Be curious and enthusiastic about language models like GPT-4 (e.g. Transformers, MoE, agents). One red flag: candidates unfamiliar with ML claiming they’re excited to learn - motivated candidates should have already started self-study. - One or more serious projects (side projects are fine) of using them in interesting ways on a unique domain. - Understand the difference between the deterministic world of software development and the probabilistic realm of machine learning. - Understand workarounds to address the limitations of AI. 4. Defensive, Fault-First Approach - Deal with high latency and variance in large models. - Handle errors, asynchronous code, streaming data, caching, and logging. This approach challenges the notion that only PhD holders in ML are qualified for AI roles. The real magic happens at the intersection of understanding model capabilities and integrating them into complex systems.
