Drones for wildlife conservation? 📷 Comment below! The Guardian recently published an insightful article about the use of drones for conservation activities to monitor illegal fishing, hunting, deforestation and more. Considering that conservation efforts can often be a dangerous and even lethal occupation, drones are deemed especially useful for studying something without putting yourself at risk. However, as a new technology, they remain in a legal grey area. “Activists argue that drones are necessary for free speech and democracy, but opponents say that they infringe on privacy” 👉 what do you think of the usage of drones to expose and record illegal activities? Let us know in the comments! Ranchers are harnessing the power of #drones to keep their cattle safe from predators. Cat Urbigkit, a rancher herself, witnessed this firsthand in Oregon, where drones equipped with flashing lights, loud sirens🚨, and even the ability to yell "GO AWAY!" are used to haze wolves away from cattle. 🐮 But this is just the first hoofbeat in the exciting stampede of drone-powered #wildlife management. Urbigkit explores the #potential of these tech cowboys to count wildlife populations, deliver vaccines and treatments remotely to animals in need, identify and locate shy animals hiding in the shadows, and even gently nudge elks away from cattle feeding grounds, keeping both sides happy and healthy. While battery life and weather conditions can currently hold them back, the potential of drones in wildlife management is sky-high and a crucial tool in keeping the delicate balance of the natural world in check, a tech-powered guardian of the wild. https://lnkd.in/eMzXEvwX

Thermal Imaging: Wildlife Conservation in Selati Game Reserve 🐘 While in the Selati Game Reserve, our drones equipped with high-resolution thermal cameras were able to capture some amazing scenes. While we were not directly focused on elephants on this day, it is a great showcase of how this technology is a powerful tool for conservation. With our wide range of SACAA approvals, we can fly above 400 feet and Beyond Visual Line of Sight, as well as approval to operate within numerous National Parks. Beyond observation, this technology aids in understanding population dynamics, tracking migration, and detecting threats. Real-time monitoring also bolsters anti-poaching efforts, safeguarding vulnerable species. #conservation #datawithdrones

🌍 Protecting Endangered Species: Kakapo Conservation with Wildlife Drones We’re proud to have partnered with the New Zealand Department of Conservation to support the critically endangered Kakapo on Whenua Hou Island. Dr. Andrew Digby, Science Advisor at the NZ Department of Conservation, shares, “From just a couple of rotations of the drone, we can get good locations on multiple birds. It’s faster than triangulation by hand and provides high-quality data we can include in our database.” Our technology is making a real difference in conservation efforts. Drones! This technology have many benefits to resolve the challenges of biodiversity conservation. Drones are very useful for wildlife monitoring and protection, habitat mapping and analysis, vegetation and biodiversity studies, disaster assessment and management, reforestation and restoration, and much more. Currently, even the monitoring of volcanic activities, which are difficult to reach by static surveillance cameras, can be done by drones operated by a community called multirotor pilots community in Indonesia. One of the most important functions of drones in Indonesia, especially for investigating wildlife trafficking, is to detect illegal activities related to the breeding and keeping of wild animals in remote areas or in high-fenced houses in urban areas. We also combine the use of drones with thermal imaging to improve the detection of illegal keeping of protected animals such as live tigers or Komodo dragons. Below is the footage from our drone conducting surveillance on illegal cockatoo captive breeding in remote area. The perpetrator has been interrogated by the police based on this footage.
