There are always challenges in managing a self-funded plan. Whether it’s being mindful of potential liability matters or the plan’s financial stability, plan sponsors constantly have their hands full. Not to mention the consideration of artificial intelligence (AI), what is widely considered to be the next frontier of healthcare. In her latest article for Benefits Pro, (“Crossroads of tech and benefits: Navigating self-funded benefit plans in 2024”) Attorney Jennifer McCormick explores a very critical healthcare topic for the new year.

A few people messaged asking my perspective on the STAT article by Brittany Trang, which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/ga2B-TXM It's a really good, well-researched read in that it provides unique/net new conversational angles compared to earlier ones. My one critique is that the article alludes to ulterior motives and biases for some key players, but then fails to acknowledge the full history of those it accuses (i.e. working at an on-ramp subsequent to an EHR). As someone who worked at an EHR (Epic), launched two different on-ramps (Zus Health and what's now Redox Access), everyone has their history and biases. It's also interesting to consider what zero equity in Epic and significant equity in the latter companies mean for those perceived biases, as well. So the least we can do is tell the whole story if we think there's impartiality. Better yet, if uncertain, we can not make it part of the story at all and assume people are just acting in good faith, to the best of their abilities and intentions (cue optimism and rose colored glasses) In the same vein, if we have to focus on history and biases, the article could acknowledge the biases of one of the main people quotes (i.e. someone who has only worked at a niche on-ramp and life sciences).
