The hi-tech icon that is SoFi stadium only has a 70,000 capacity. So what capacity would you be planning? Will be interesting to see how this plays out …. - What capacity will it end up being? - How often will it be filled to capacity? - Does it leave the desired legacy? - What does the latest stadium tech look like? - Will it create the economic benefits as planned? - Is bigger actually better?

As much as I admit that I don't know all the intricacies of sport broadcasting contracts, and which rights they will be able to hold onto long-term, I'm finding it hard to see how this would fail. Bringing the fan experience from almost any venue in the world, to your local city, while occupying a fractional footprint compared to another full-service sports venue, within a major urban environment seems like a win-win. Again, I don't know all the details, but from what I'm seeing, I'll predict that this will surpass the E-Sports craze in adoption and profitability with ease. https://lnkd.in/e3JnaRcm

This weekend, the National Basketball Association (NBA) will unveil a full video LED court for experimental use during the league’s #AllStarWeekend in Indianapolis. It’s a shining example of how this event has evolved in recent years. No longer is the focus solely on an exhibition game showcasing 24 of the league's star players. The quality of the game divides opinion, and in today’s age it’s easier than ever to see these standout athletes during the regular season via broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. Instead of “player discovery”, All-Star Weekend is now renowned for “innovation discovery” – serving as an incubator/sandbox/lab for new technologies that can evolve the fan experience. Last year, for example, commissioner Adam Silver unveiled a new NBA app feature allowing viewers to scan an avatar of themselves into a live game. The league has strategically created its own version of CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) and is welcoming the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) into the decision-making process. As All-Star Weekend reinvents itself, and valuable airtime is used in new fashion, the KPIs that determine whether this annual event is a success or not are also evolving. Once, TV ratings alone were the defining metric. While ratings remain important, social media engagement, sponsor satisfaction and thematic media coverage are also key measures of success.” It remains to be seen whether LED glass courts will be applied in a regular season competition. Right now, I can envisage the tech being used to air game highlights during breaks, make 3-point and dunking contests more exciting, improve the virality of halftime shows, or even further differentiate the NBA’s in-season tournament. THOUGHT STARTER — This was a neat Disney-themed Putt-Putt installation at the recent D23 event. And as sports organizations create entertainment (and real estate-focused) hubs, it makes you think about how teams can best use these hubs beyond the more traditional retail, restaurants, performance venues and sports bars — especially to offer more entertainment and 'sportainment' options for families, teens, and adults - Like this, could a team-themed Putt-Putt be a perfect family activity before or after a game - And of course all the other possibilities, whether bowling, Top Golf and its derivatives, kid/adult arcade, novel stuff like axe throwing, etc. - Who's gonna use all that space to open a mini theme park or an always-on sports 'experience' park? Let alone something that incorporates advanced technology Families and social groups of all ages can look to build their whole day or weekend around these hubs where going to the game is just one part. A temporary Disney-themed Putt-Putt today, a permanent MLB-themed mini golf experience, roller coaster, go-karts, immersive AR arena, etc. etc. in the future!
