25 years ago, I hit a very important day – my first solo as a pilot of a light aircraft.   It was a personal achievement to be one of the first students to be going through the revised and compressed JAR syllabus and with only 9 lessons under my belt. Today, I am reflecting on what it taught me beyond the skills of flying a plane.   I will never forget the moment when my instructor finished the last circuit with me, asked me to taxi into the holding bay. Nonchalantly he opened the cabin of our little PA-28, hopped out and said: ‘You are ready, off you go. I will be watching from the tower’.   Bang. I was alone, in a cockpit for the first time ever, frightened to death but with an exhilarating sense of #empowerment. If my teacher could see something I could not, I should not question it. So, I followed my drills, everything I had practiced for. ATC cleared the airspace for me and I taxied to the threshold. Tower cleared me for take off and I knew I had to trust my teachers judgement. Shut your eyes and get on with it. I took off, went round the circuit and landed, the tower called ‘Congratulations, Echo Oscar Romeo Golf. Cleared for taxi.’ All I felt was gut-busting pride. All fear, doubt and uncertainty was gone, because my teacher empowered me.   Now I am in leadership advisory and development. I look back at this moment in my emerging career- it was the platform for my #cadet #sponsorship with BA, for everything I did hence forward from sales and consulting, running my own business, becoming British champion in #rowing. Why?   Because I had a #mentor and teacher who saw my potential and empowered me with his trust when I had none in myself. Today we teach leaders to empower the ones they see potential and ask them to go for #stretchgoals, trust them. This is the gift I was given in that moment: Cpt Nick Larkin made me face my fears and didn't accept doubt: from going solo, to landing on the wrong runway (sorry Bournemouth ATC!) to spinning and instrument flying in pea soup across the channel to have lunch in France. He made me do it all.   And this was most important lesson of all: I grew because I was given the opportunity to. Because of his trust and mentorship I was able to thrive in my training, the brutal selection processes and further training. The way he taught me was empowering via the trust he had in my competence and capabilities, coupled with he knowledge that he had given me the necessary tools.   25 years later as a leadership advisory consultant, I applaud Cpt Larkin for this advanced leadership style. Because the reality is: it was the moment I stopped being unsure of myself, thinking I was ridiculous to dream big and I became someone who went to grab my dreams with both hands.   That is modern leadership.

FAQ Friday! If I attend a program will I need to present? Much like driving a car, learning to deliver a presentation requires practice. For this reason we don’t have a ‘look and learn’ approach. Instead all our programs are extremely hands-on and high-intensity. Typically they comprise two-thirds skills practice time together with individualised advice, guidance and mentoring on that practice. We believe that our programs offer more practice time than any other provider we know. Not only that, but the practice is reality-based and business-focussed.
