🌱 Building Resilient Healthcare: The Rising Need for Green Hospitals 🌱 I recently came across an interesting article that highlights the urgent need for green hospitals—a topic that's becoming increasingly relevant in today's world. Private equity is increasingly turning its attention to healthcare, with nearly €9 billion invested across 154 deals in Europe by August 2024. But beyond high returns, there’s a growing focus on sustainable healthcare infrastructure as investors respond to the urgent need for greener hospitals. 💡 Why does this matter? Research reveals that 1 in 12 hospitals globally are at risk of shutdown due to severe weather events like heat waves, storms, and floods. The Cross Dependency Initiative (XDI) warns that if greenhouse gas emissions aren't drastically cut, over 16,000 hospitals could face high risks by 2100—including those in Europe, which has already seen extreme temperatures impacting hospital operations. The UK being one of 5 countries with the most high risk hospitals in Europe. 🏥 What can be done? Natasha Nelson, CTO for Services at Schneider Electric, highlights innovative strategies to boost hospital resilience, such as: Smart Sensors & Predictive Monitoring: Used in Helsinki’s Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS), these technologies have reduced water, raw material, and CO2 consumption by up to 90% while extending equipment life by 25%. Microgrids & Renewable Energy: Integrating renewable sources helps maintain reliable power during weather-induced outages. Digital Solutions & AI: Advanced analytics, lifecycle digitalisation, and AI are key to optimising hospital operations, enhancing safety, and improving performance. Nelson envisions future healthcare facilities as care-centric, hyper-efficient, and sustainable, equipped with adaptable digital solutions and expert consultation. To achieve this vision, investors must prioritise building resilient infrastructure that can withstand climate risks and ensure continuity of care. 🌐 The time to invest in green hospitals is now. Let’s create healthcare systems that are not only sustainable but also resilient enough to face the climate challenges ahead. What are your thoughts on the need for Greener Hospitals? 1. By using reprocessed devices, hospitals lower their costs for #singleusemedicaldevice in the range 25 to 40%.💲 2.Reducing Waste in Healthcare is another benefit of SUD #reprocessing.🌐 3.#AMDR published Reprocessing Carbon Emission Calculator✅ ( https://lnkd.in/dTVPs34B) With this tool hospitals are now able to calculate their Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reducing results.
Celebrate #EarthDay by exploring AMDR’s new CO2 calculator, powered by research from LCAs that show #reprocessed “single-use” #medicaldevices (rSUDs) reduce #ghgemissions at hospitals by an average of 44%: https://ow.ly/CQaG50RkQlJ The calculator gives sustainability managers a free tool to track and lower emissions at hospitals by using rSUDs. "We have long had the science to prove reprocessing is safe, and more recently because of peer reviewed life cycle assessments, we know they substantially cut emissions compared to using virgin devices," said Daniel J. Vukelich, President and CEO, AMDR. "But now, we’ve created a free calculator tool – available for all to use – so that hospitals everywhere can approximate how much they are reducing their carbon footprint by using reprocessed 'single-use' devices." By using rSUDs, AMDR members help over 9,500 U.S. #hospitals and surgical centers slash pollution-causing waste from the medical supply chain while saving costs and critical resources. "LCAs have been providing valuable data and insights in other industries for decades, and we're proud to help translate this science into meaning for hospitals," said sustainability researcher Cassandra Thiel, PhD, President and CEO of Clinically Sustainable Consulting. "Based on the research, a switch to more reprocessed devices is a straightforward way for hospitals to reduce their carbon footprint." #EarthDay2024 #sustainablehealthcare #hospital #climatechange #climatesmart
