Innovator turned entrepreneur - Professor Gabriela Medero’s journey from laboratory to market is an inspiration for every academic. Professor Gabriela Medero, Associate Principal (Enterprise), is the creator of a revolutionary brick made from more than 90% construction waste material. Named K-BRIQ®, Prof. Medero’s invention was more than 10 years in the making and addresses a key global environmental issue that’s close to her heart. It all started when she joined Heriot-Watt University in 2006 as a lecturer in Civil Engineering within the School of the Built Environment. A keen environmentalist, Prof. Medero decided to combine her expertise with her lifelong interest in preserving the planet and its finite resources. "The environment has always been one of my greatest passions,” she says as a globally travelled scientist who’s deeply concerned about the future of the planet. The K-BRIQ®, which has less than 5% of the carbon footprint of a traditional clay brick, is manufactured by Kenoteq - a company Prof Medero co-founded with Dr Sam Chapman. The Edinburgh-based start-up is a prime example of a company that has successfully spun out from Heriot-Watt University. Prof Medero says: “Over a decade ago I was working on a research project into material composition. I was exploring sustainable, traditional construction methods, and identifying the many limitations of historical techniques for modern-day applications. Introducing NUtech Ventures' 2023 Innovators! Marc Maguire, Associate Professor in The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, received the Breakthrough Innovation of the Year award. The award recognizes a technology developed in the past year that will likely have a profound effect on industry, business or a field of study. Maguire led a University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering research team that developed a plant-based mixture for concrete masonry blocks. This plant-based mixture is environmentally friendly and sustainable and helps meet the world’s construction demands. Additionally, the load-bearing capable, hemp-based composite is lighter than traditional cement while meeting the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for load-bearing masonry units regarding strength, water absorption and weight. "Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) introduce a polymer-based material with unique properties in the journal Nature Communications. This material allows sunlight to enter, maintains a more comfortable indoor climate without additional energy, and cleans itself like a lotus leaf. The new development could replace glass components in walls and roofs in the future. The research team has successfully tested the material in outdoor tests on the KIT campus. Maximizing natural light in buildings is popular and can save on energy costs. However, traditional glass roofs and walls also present problems such as glare, lack of privacy, and overheating. Alternative solutions, such as coatings and light-diffusing materials, have not yet provided a comprehensive remedy." #transparentmetamaterial #selfcleaning #passivecooling

Tight budgets, combined with the utilization of standard materials, systems, and construction methods, often result in uninspiring prototypical schools. But when the School District of Osceola County reached out to Little to design NeoCity Academy, the design team took an innovative approach. Instead of looking at existing models, they incorporated sustainable features within the strict budget, resulting in Florida’s first high-performance, net-zero public school. Completed in 2019, the 500-student, magnet STEM public high school was designed to meet a performance goal of 76% less energy and realize zero-energy use over 12 months. Its solar power system produces enough electricity to offset what the building uses over an entire year. The school saves $112,000 per year in energy costs, and life-cycle costs will save the school system $3.2 million over 20 years! The NeoCity Academy story illustrates how forward-thinking design and sustainable practices can overcome budget constraints to create a high-performance, net-zero energy school. My project URBAN-DELTA: Metropolises in the Mud. Innovation in Delta Building Technology in Europe and China in the pre-Industrial Age has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant. Urban deltas are among the most densely populated parts of the earth, but their success is a relatively recent phenomenon. Until two centuries ago, most civilisations preferred higher, solid ground. This project studies technological innovations in the production of the built environment in three pioneering deltas that have been urbanised for centuries: the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt (Low Countries), the Po Delta (Venice) and the Yangtze Delta (China). It asks how builders overcame technological limitations. Did innovation occur incrementally or were there bursts at specific times and places? What were the dynamics of these processes and what factors stimulated innovation? Two PhD positions in Construction History and two postdoc positions in Economic History and Chinese Studies/Construction History will be advertised in 2024. European Research Council (ERC) KU Leuven

MSc MADE research forms a huge portion of our impact in tackling Amsterdam’s pressing urban challenges. Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) - a joint degree from Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research - is housed within the AMS Institute building on the Marineterrein Amsterdam, and the ‘urban engineers’ in training forge close links with our work via Living Labs, experiments, and more. Here at the Cynefin Co. we talk a lot about constraints as things that might create possibilities rather than merely curtail behaviours or desires. David McPherson’s The Virtues of Limits outlines humility, reverence, moderation, contentment, neighbourliness, and loyalty as virtues that constrain us in order to set us free. It is interesting that at least three of the above virtues, if not all, are constraints that surfaced from the narratives in the SenseMaker® study. This #Sensemaker study (#research) is part of the CHARMS project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany (BMBF). Traditional buildings in northern Thailand are a matter of #cultural pride and make great tourist attractions, and even more importantly, they are structures in which people actually live, work and play, replete with the inheritances of emotions and memories. While these traditional buildings were built on principles of architecture and design that suited the local environment in terms of the materials available and the styles suitable for the climate, a lot of resources can be spent on preserving and renovating structures that are at times ill-suited to the realities of modern life – increasingly severe effects of #climatechange in terms of pollution and fluctuations in seasonal cycles, and of course, staving off the second law of thermodynamics, aka “things fall apart”. Hall, Rik Eshuis, and Paul Chan. Hogeschool Rotterdam will actively participate and support in bringing this to market and practical application through the lead of Tomasz Jaskiewicz, and in interaction with SPARK Campus and VONK Rotterdam of City of Rotterdam. The project includes active industry participation by ABN AMRO Bank N.V. and Huisrijk, as well as VolkerWessels, Witteveen+Bos, Adex Groep, BIM-Connected, InnoTractor, Madaster, and Martens keramiek bv. Eindhoven University of Technology will contribute primarily with a novel IT infrastructure, besides coordinating.
