Years ago, I heard someone say, “The insurance industry helps people’s dreams come true.” Those words deeply resonated with me, and I often share this sentiment with new professionals entering the field. Think about it: we’re there for some of life’s most exciting moments—new homes, cars, jobs, marriages, babies, and so much more. Without insurance, many of these milestones might not be possible. As we prepare for the holiday season, it’s a good time to reflect on our own dreams. We spend so much of our time helping others achieve theirs, but our personal and professional aspirations matter just as much. Take this season as an opportunity to pause, dream big, and align your actions with those dreams. Last week I had the great pleasure of speaking to thirty or so talented young individuals at AXA XL’s Market Academy. It’s a brilliant initiative devoted to emerging insurance leaders (some of Howden’s own future stars took part). And it was great to see such energy and enthusiasm on display. Events like this are really important because the stats are stark. We know by 2028 some 50% of the insurance workforce is projected to enter retirement. So we must get new talent into our sector. That means bringing in people of different genders and races but also of different cultures and mindsets. Fresh talent is a shot of adrenaline in the arm. It creates strong businesses. It makes us relevant as a sector. And it keeps us honest. But let’s face it. Whenever people think of exciting future careers insurance isn’t in the conversation. So when I entered the room, I asked how many people wanted to go into the industry when they were at school. Predictably no-one put up their hands. Then when I asked how many would now recommend insurance to their friends or family everyone put their hand up. We have to do more to bridge that perception gap. And we can. We've got a fantastic story to tell. Our job makes a genuine difference. There’s not a single area of the economy where insurance doesn’t make an impact. What’s more we're in the risk business. Whether it's geopolitical instability or climate change or cyber…the world’s getting a riskier place! So what we do matters. One day I want to ask a roomful of young people if insurance was their career of choice and watch a sea of hands shoot up. Then again, the passion I saw today has given me hope that day is not far off… #insurance #careers

As the New Year begins, it's a common time for self-reflection on our lives, careers, and the paths we're on. Many people choose to make significant changes during this period, while others decide to double down and forge ahead. There's no right or wrong—only decisions that shape the next chapter of our lives. Over the past five years, I've made quite a few changes myself. Some have been amazing and exceeded my expectations, while others have presented challenges that pushed me to grow more than I thought possible. Joining Ando Insurance has been one of the best decisions I've made. While the work aligns with my 35+ years in insurance, it's the environment that has made all the difference. I'm fortunate to work with leaders who cheer you on rather than just measure your performance, and who encourage innovation, creativity, and diversity of thought. If you're pondering or wrestling with tough decisions, instead of searching for the "perfect job," look for a great culture and a great working environment. Seek out an organization that will enhance you as a person, rather than just push you to do more. Look for people who set the pace, act with integrity, and inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Don't settle for second best—strive to be the best version of you. If you're struggling with that internal conversation, reach out to someone outside your usual circle for honest perspective. I did, and it helped me immensely. Now, I work for the type of organization I should have always been at, volunteer in my local community, serve on two not-for-profit boards, and continue to coach football for my local club. This isn't a "well done me" post, but rather a reflection on the importance of seeking honest feedback and different perspectives. Go and be the best version of yourself—you'll be surprised at just how great you can be.

Breaking the Mold: My Journey of Sticking to My Purpose For years, I felt the pressure to follow the path society laid out for me. As a single parent of three, working a 9-to-5 as a property manager while building my career as a life insurance agent, the expectations felt overwhelming. People often have their opinions—what I should focus on, how I should spend my time, or even what’s "realistic" for someone in my position. But I realized something: my life, my purpose, and my legacy don’t need to fit into anyone else’s mold. Choosing to stick out and go for what matters to me—providing for my family, building a future I’m proud of, and doing it all with intention—hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. I’ve had to step away from what’s comfortable, ignore the doubts, and focus on creating a life that aligns with *my* goals. It’s not always smooth sailing, but the freedom of walking my own path is priceless. If you’re feeling like you don’t fit into society’s expectations, don’t be afraid to stand out. Your purpose isn’t meant to blend in—it’s meant to shine.

I have been sitting with the same thoughts that Michael shared so perfectly. So many people gave me the same warnings of what working at MMA would be like, yet none of them actually worked there. I have heard them tell their clients the same negative things. I stand beside Michael and I am so glad I didn't listen to what they said either. When my son got married a few weeks after starting at MMA, it was encouraged and expected that I be fully present in my personal life during that time. I have a leader that needed to cut a meeting short to pick up his sick child from school, and I was so grateful that he showed that having a family and being successful in business are attainable. No shame in having a family that needs your care. The conversations about people are positive behind closed doors, there's no time wasted on unproductive negative talk. Creating a culture of trust and true communication. Our leaders will stand in front of a room full of colleagues and ask for questions, and they TRULY want you to ask any question. There are no black lists created for speaking up. Everyone is kind and thoughtful, I felt welcomed and included from day one. A true seat at the table. Knowing everything what I know inside and outside, I have no doubt that Marsh McLennan Agency is a true partner to our clients. Echoing what Michael Spath said...
