Chroma 0185 - In Which Andrew Zeller Explains What is VFX I have been teaching the intro to VFX to every class I've had, and this time around, Andrew Zeller asked if he could do it. I was more than delighted since I tend to take too long and go into too much detail in the first week, overloading my jet-lagged students. Armed with his new slides, Andrew conducted an 80-minute presentation for the students of Alpha Chromatica Education (ACE). Watching Andrew's presentation was so refreshing; the experiences he has had as a student, a compositor, and an educator have helped shape his understanding of VFX and how to best explain it to students who have little to no understanding of the inner workings of a VFX pipeline. Chroma 0115 - In Which Kuan Tsai Creates Depth! In this insightful tutorial, Kuan, a former compositor at DNEG Vancouver returned to Alpha Chromatica to demonstrates how to create depth in a scene using Nuke's Camera Tracker and Depth Generator node. The process begins with dropping in a camera tracker to capture depth data, which is crucial for generating a realistic depth pass. Kuan emphasizes the importance of not getting too caught up in tracking accuracy for this task, as the focus is on gathering depth information rather than precise point tracking. Once the tracking is complete, Kuan solves the camera movement and, despite potential errors, proceeds to create a scene. The magic happens with the Depth Generator node, where the camera and source footage are plugged in. Kuan guides us through tweaking the settings to polish the depth map, ensuring that objects closer to the camera have lower depth values, while those further away have higher values. Kuan also introduces the concept of frame separation to reduce noise and improve clarity in the depth map. By calculating depth at specific intervals and interpolating between them, the result is a cleaner, more defined depth map. This tutorial is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to enhance their compositing skills, especially in creating convincing depth in their scenes. Awhile ago I did some work on a sci-fi R&D Cinematic project around a lunar mining operation. One of my tasks was to concept a crystal that the hero character discovers.
