🍺 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝘀. 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 🌍 Did you know that the packaging of your favorite beer plays a big role in its carbon emissions? While we all enjoy a cold one, the environmental impact varies depending on the container. 📊 𝘉𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴 tends to have 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 compared to cans, mainly due to the production and transportation of glass, which is heavier and more energy-intensive to produce. This serves as a reminder: Packaging matters! 🌱 Small choices in what we consume can help reduce our environmental footprint. 👉 Want a more detailed breakdown? I'm continually impressed by the strategic approach Oregon and OBRC have taken over the years in implementing an effective Deposit Return System (DRS). Our model not only demonstrates environmental stewardship but also highlights the business smarts in creating an efficient, cost-effective recycling system. Our program, thanks to the industry-led, vertically integrated structure, showcases one of the lowest operational costs per container globally, paired with un-rivaled consumer access. It will be interesting to watch as California introduces its wine bottle redemption initiative and explores recycling solutions; there's a clear opportunity for businesses to learn and adapt. Our success in Oregon serves as a benchmark for the industry, underscoring the importance of efficiency, integration, and mandatory participation in creating a scalable and profitable recycling ecosystem. Other should learn and champion strategies that not only enhance recycling infrastructure but also align with our core business objectives, paving the way for sustainable growth and innovation. #BusinessInnovation #SustainableGrowth #RecyclingSolutions #IndustryLeadership

Here's the thing, companies don't always have to follow sustainable rules. To adhere to the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Green Guides, manufacturers are mandated to ensure the accuracy of their labeling claims. Yet, unqualified claims about a product's recyclability are permitted only when 60% or more customers have access to recycling facilities accepting the material in locations where the product is sold. In 2021, a series of lawsuits filed by environmentalists and consumers challenged alleged false claims made by these corporations regarding the recyclability of their products. For instance, the Smith v. Keurig Green Mountain lawsuit, initiated in 2018, alleges that Keurig's single-use coffee pods, known as K-cups, are misleadingly labeled as recyclable. Consumers shouldn't be lied to when trying to find out which companies are sustainable! What is the solution? Companies advertising recyclable products must meticulously document their claims and adhere closely to the standards outlined in the Green Guides before they are faced with a lawsuit, not after. #caromcares #sustainable #greenwashing #corporateresponsibility

Hi 👋 Let’s have a conversation about our partnership with recycling affiliates to improve recovery rates, a crucial aspect of our sector's commitment to environmental responsibility. For more than two decades, Canadian beverage companies and provincial and territorial beverage container recovery organizations have been collaborating to enhance the collection and recycling of beverage containers. This joint effort has not only led to a significant rise in the recovery rate of all beverage containers but also educated consumers, businesses, and governments about the importance of recycling these containers. When we work together on beverage container recycling, we can #BeatPlasticPollution 🌎 Learn more at MadeToBeRemade.ca

On Monday evening our Product manager Caitlyn Smith and Sales Manager Lewis Maslen were thrilled to represent the packaging industry at Sussex Six’s Food & Drink Networking Workshop this week. They joined fellow foodies and local business owners to not only present our packaging offering but also discuss solutions to their local products face to face, all with one goal in mind; sustainability. Here’s what they learnt: People want sustainability - Sustainability is definitely the forefront of business owners' minds in the food and wine industry. We discussed everything from compostable plant based plastic alternatives (coming soon in our product range!) to the humble honeycomb sleeve as a recyclable solution to a number of packaging conundrums. Checking in with the industry is key - Events like these are fundamental for us to ensure we are providing the most value to our customers, understanding their challenges and meeting their needs as they evolve and grow. We’re on the right track! - We left with a smile on our face knowing that the products we are delivering and developing align beautifully with what our customers want right now. In 1983, I took my first winemaking titled position at a winery in Southern California where every day the sound of recycling was audible & prioritized. Joseph Filippi from Joseph Filippi Winery ran nearly a full time crew washing glass bottles for multiple wineries in Southern California, including the well known San Antonio Winery of Riboli Family Wines. Glass being separated, washed, sanitized, reboxed, and palletized, ready for shipment back to client wineries for reuse. The tell-tale sound of glass pinging against each other with the added shattering of glass as the workers threw away glass that didn’t make it past inspection. Imagine, that 40 years ago the California wine industry was massively focused on efficiencies and natural resource conservation. Climate evolution aside, natural resource conservation is the motivational topic that most every human can align with. Natural resource conservation means reducing waste. Natural resource conservation means saving our hard-earned money. Natural resource conservation means reducing the impact on our water, power, & fuel systems. Natural resource conservation reduces the energy that creates environmental stress, the exact topic of climate change. “Reduce-reuse” is the easiest part of the “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle” trio. Just think about the waste we so easily walk right by without a thought. Leaving the water running when brushing our teeth. 30+% of all food grown does make it into actual consumption because we throw away food we don’t eat. I imagine if we got serious about this, we would put the “garbage disposal” manufacturers out of business! If we got serious about this, our scraps would compost in every home for a garden, not by government mandates but by good stewardship principles that we teach and mentor into every generation. Much alike, Free Flow Wines & Flexcube’s business foundations are principles of resource conservation that do not cause an increase in natural resources per-capita but rather greatly reduce the use & need for ‘consuming’, literally engineering quality & efficiency as something more than just a “marketing message”. Supporting Free Flow with more than audible support is to embrace it with a purchase order. Remember the Blue Diamond Growers Almond ads, “Just a can a week, that’s all we ask.” Change, & a true societal conscience is shown through purchase orders. Sometimes a little regulatory ‘encouragement’ may be helpful, but certainly should not be the driver of our conscience. Whether it’s the 200 year old tree we harvest for 7 barrels to throw away 5-7 years later (dwell in that for a moment) or the producing of more waste to make on-premise wine consumption more efficient & accessible (not to mention more or less affordable), change has & always will occur through our spending habits. Buy Free Flow services. It’s a change we all benefit from. #freeflow #resourceconservation #naturalresourceconservation #wine #flexcube #sustainablebrands
VP of Business Development: Helping Improve Wine By-The-Glass Profitability, Guest Experience and Sustainability using the Only Reusable Package in the Wine Industry with National Availability
Proud to be featured in WineLand Media's March issue. Thank you Wanda Augustyn for taking the time to interview me, and share Free Flow Wines' story over in the Rainbow Nation and beyond! "Companies, consumers and governments increasingly realise there’s no way our planet can continue supporting the status quo of disposable packaging. It’s not feasible to recycle our way out of this mess. It’s either reducing our total usage, which means recession or finding a way to reuse our resources."
