Samsung Electronics is one of the largest technology and electronics conglomerates in the world by revenue. → Samsung Electronics ships as many smartphones as $AAPL annually (~230 million). → The company has a dominant global market share in the capital intensive memory chip business (~45% for DRAM, ~33% for NAND). → It's the second largest semiconductor foundry in the world after $TSM – making leading-edge chips for companies like Apple, $NVDA, and $QCOM. → The company's semiconductor division, Device Solutions, now accounts for a third of revenue but a whopping 55% of EBIT. → The consumer electronics division (excl. Mobile Experience) on the other hand – making everything from TVs, washing machines to air conditioners – accounts for 19% of revenue but only 3% of EBIT. → Samsung Electronics is the 23rd largest public company in the world by market cap, $370B. Samsung Electronics is one of the largest technology and electronics conglomerates in the world by revenue. We have just created this infographic that illustrates the revenue and profitability of the company's five business units 👇 Here are some facts that caught our eye during the research process: → Samsung Electronics ships as many smartphones as Apple annually (~230 million). → The company has a dominant global market share in the capital intensive memory chip business (~45% for DRAM, ~33% for NAND). → It's the second largest semiconductor foundry in the world after TSMC – making leading-edge chips for companies like Apple, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. → The company's semiconductor division, Device Solutions, now accounts for a third of revenue but a whopping 55% of EBIT. → The consumer electronics division (excl. #Samsung’s Memory and Smartphone Divisions Reportedly Eye Collaboration with #TSMC and #MediaTek According to Taiwan’s *Commercial Times*, industry sources indicate that Samsung’s memory and smartphone divisions are exploring the possibility of outsourcing orders to Taiwanese companies, including #TSMC and #MediaTek. Amid intense competition in the global semiconductor market, TSMC maintained its leadership position in the foundry sector during #Q2, generating $20.82 billion in revenue and capturing a 62.3% market share, according to TrendForce. Meanwhile, #Samsung, in second place, saw its revenue increase by 14.2% to $3.83 billion, accounting for 11.5% of the market. The report highlights that Samsung's primary business segments have recently fallen short of expectations, with its foundry and memory divisions facing formidable competition from #TSMC and #SKHynix. Additionally, its smartphone division has been affected by the “green line issue.” To address these challenges, Samsung is considering partnerships with Taiwanese manufacturers. Samsung Electronics anticipates a more than 10-fold increase in first-quarter operating profit, surpassing market projections, attributed to rising chip prices amid increased demand for artificial intelligence. Despite this positive outlook, Samsung shares fell 1.3%, reflecting investor anticipation for progress updates in its memory chip business. The estimated operating profit of 6.6 trillion won ($4.89 billion) surpasses expectations, marking a 931% increase from the previous year. However, revenue fell slightly short at 71 trillion won, missing estimates. Analysts attribute the profit beat to improved NAND flash chip inventory valuation and positive response to new Galaxy S24 smartphones featuring on-device AI. #SamsungElectronics #OperatingProfit #ChipPrices #ArtificialIntelligence

Whenever Professor Emerita Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail explains the Open Innovation concept, she always takes mobile phone as example where one device contains multiple patent/IP. Open innovation is a strategic approach that goes beyond relying solely on internal research and development (R&D) efforts. Instead, it actively seeks external input, including ideas, technologies, and expertise. When a single technology alone may not suffice for commercialization as a product, then maybe the way forward is combining ideas and technologies to create a comprehensive product
