Andrea Caniato’s Post

What do starlings have to do with voice? Well, the flight of starlings is an excellent example of self-regulation in #complexsystems. I'm preparing video materials for my next #voice workshop (Rome) and complex systems theory is one of the pillars of the type of voice work I offer. Believe it or not, this theory offers a fascinating (and effective) model of how the voice can be managed and developed. If not interfered with, complex systems can create impressively efficient and flexible #structure by themselves. In certain conditions, the free interactions between individual elements gives rise to a form of impersonal, collective #intelligence that runs the system and optimizes its operation without any need of controlling inputs from the outside. If and when treated as a #complexsystem, a voice can produce the acoustic and perceptual equivalent of the images you will find in this fascinating videoclip. Powerful but effortless. Impactful, yet weightless. These birds are not trying to convince me, but I can't stop paying attention to them because in which they they do what they do. Nothing is more captivating than fascination.
