Prof Dorn, your post much appreciated , and thought provoking as usual. , but I believe AI can enhance rather than diminish the meaningful aspects of healthcare. By automating routine tasks, AI allows physicians and nurses more time for human connection and intellectual engagement. The diagnostic process, for instance, could become even more stimulating with AI as a collaborative tool, providing deeper insights and allowing healthcare professionals to focus on complex cases. Education can also be enriched with AI, offering personalized learning experiences while still allowing for the joy of teaching. It's about finding the right balance and using AI to complement, not replace, the human touch in medicine.

Is AI coming for your job as an SLP? Not likely. The Daily Mail took a look at the high salary careers most - and least - likely to be replaced by AI. In terms of the safest, the top ten were all in healthcare. As an SLP, your job is the seventh safest out there in terms of risking AI replacement. That's probably not a big surprise for you. After all, SLPs need to offer personalized care, adapting to your clients' individual needs. We need to pay attention to the impact of dehumanizing (yes, removing a human from even part of the interaction is dehumanizing) portions of patient interactions on outcomes. The relationship with the clinician is still the best predictor of adherence to a treatment plan. Taking a history, explaining a diagnosis, reviewing a tx plan, all strengthen the relationship on which outcomes depend. We’re at risk of missing the forest for the trees.

Hmmm the way this reads it’s about replacing (and saving money for the company) not augmenting. While I understand we have shortages, we here don’t necessarily use nurses for diagnosis. I always say that #AI will not replace the doctor. And some people smiled about this argument. But the relationship between the doctors and their patients is very special and very often they know each other for a long time and became a Team. And as every patient has a medical team with different members who is human, why should AI replace that. AI is already at play… … in the medical field, where diagnostic tools have offered a mixed bag of results. But there are sure to be questions surrounding whether AI can or should provide any kind of patient-facing care. # Health care experts told Stateline that, while hospitals already use algorithms and machine-learning tools, regulations must ensure that humans are calling the final shots. # Research professor Maura Grossman told MedPage Today that AI can act as a “second pair of eyes” for a human nurse, provide recommendations, and do admin work, but that the algorithms need to be evaluated carefully for misinformation and bias. BTW: A Pew Research Center survey found that 60% of Americans would be uncomfortable with medical professionals using AI, while 79% said they don’t want AI in their mental health care.

Healthcare will be impacted the most by AI 🏥 An AI agent just outperformed nurses in understanding lab reports, drug toxicity, and impact on Zoom videos… 🙄 Soon AI, not humans, will be analyzing lab reports, diagnose symptoms, and recommend medication. AI will be far more robust and error-free in this critical area than humans!! The only clinicians that will be truly threatened by AI will be those who shouldn't have been clinicians in the first place. The same holds true for most jobs in every industry.
