New preprint on arxiv, together with Ludovico Tesser, Christian Spånslätt Rugarn, Inès Safi, and Janine Splettstoesser: "Thermodynamic and energetic constraints on out-of-equilibrium tunneling rates" https://lnkd.in/dXGZaQr4. In this work, we show how thermodynamic quantities constrain the transition rates between two weakly coupled quantum systems in nonequilibrium conditions, specifically in the presence of a temperature bias. We find that the thermodynamic and energetic costs for establishing or depleting the temperature bias put a bound on the nonequilibrium response of the transition rates to small temperature changes. Our results are applicable to a large class of experimentally relevant systems, as we exemplify by analyzing an atom coupled to a nonlinear cavity and few-sites tight-binding chains, which can be relevant for molecular transport. Work by Pete Sercel that I had the pleasure of contributing to is published in Adv. Mater. on the Optical Activity of Chiral Excitons. This is detailed theory work done by Pete who built up a model to describe the circular dichorism observed in hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites with low symmetry induced by a chiral cation. My favorite figure showing the mixing of states with symmetry reduction is below. Link here: https://lnkd.in/gb62GbWN This is one of those fundamental papers I'll be curious to look back on in X years to see if this found use in photonic applications. Otherwise it's just a great explanation of how one tiny tiny fraction of the world works; which is fantastic as well!

Is the regime for quantum advantage when solving nonlinear fluid equations with Carleman DNS practically useful? In collaboration with Dylan Lewis, Sachin S. Bharadwaj and Mikel Sanz we have addressed the question above in this recent Arxiv preprint https://lnkd.in/dvX8viXi

Happy to finish this paper (with a graduate student at Ohio State U). We found that peak of a certain observable has a deep relationship to whether the many-body system is holographic or not. In the past, several groups have focused on computation of the Lyapunov exponent, spectral gap ratio, spectral form factor, and out-of-time-correlators. This paper grew out of (i) Sanne Vergouwen's MSc thesis, and (ii) my forthcoming book with Jeremy Butterfield. It provides a philosopher's perspective on the Seiberg-Witten theory.   In the Seiberg-Witten theory, supersymmetry is a tool that enables an exact quantum mechanical description of the theory's low-energy regime. Although (i) and (ii) contain more detail, this paper focusses on two aspects:   (A) the significance of supersymmetry for discussions of the ontology of four-dimensional interacting quantum field theories, and   (B) the emergence of the low-energy theory and the role of geometry and topology in such emergence.   The paper is forthcoming in Synthese, in the Topical Collection 'Establishing the Philosophy of Supersymmetry'. Happy New Year to everyone! 🎉🎉🎉 Looking for some stimulating holiday reading? Check out our new manuscript on arXiv: "The 3BF Theory as a TQFT" . In this work, we study the path integral quantization of the topological 3BF theory, whose gauge symmetry is described by a 3-group. This theory is relevant for the quantization of general relativity coupled to Standard Model of elementary particles. We explicitly construct a state sum corresponding to the discretized path integral of a 3BF action. Being a topological invariant of 4-dimensional manifolds with boundary, this state sum gives rise to a topological quantum field theory (TQFT), realized as a functor between the category of cobordisms and the category of Hilbert spaces. After an introduction to appropriate category theory concepts and the construction of the state sum, we provide an explicit proof that it satisfies all Atiyah's axioms, and thus represents a genuine TQFT. The formulation of this TQFT represents a major step in the spinfoam quantization programme for a realistic theory of quantum gravity with matter. We are excited to announce the publication of a paper co-authored by several members of the NEUROPIC project. The interaction between light and matter is generally rather weak. This is also the case of the optomechanical interaction, in which the electromagnetic field couples with motional degrees of freedom (vibrations and mechanical displacements of all sorts) of an object. This interaction is mediated by radiation pressure and gives rise to a number of interesting physical process, the most remarkable are the cooling of an nano-object to its ground state and the amplification of a given vibration through dynamical backaction. As any other coupling mechanism, it is possible to engineer it and enhance it by confining the electromagnetic field at the nanoscale. In the recent paper published in Annalen der Physik S. Edelstein et al. analyze two possible nanostructure geometries and perform an optimization analysis of the two figures of merit governing this process: the spectral linewidth of the optical resonator (i.e. quality factor) and the coupling strength between the optical resonator and the vibrations of the system.
